Great place. Rhode Island is the best kept secret in the USA. Glad to see that you are a blue state.

1. The Newport tour was a real education |
|
and I admit I finished it in silly giggles, thinking of all those nouveau riche people dismantling rooms in the palaces of Europe, reassembling them in their "cottages" in Newport, and expecting to impress the former owners with the whole thing.
Those places had to be turned into museums because they're so badly designed that they didn't even make good hotels. Turning them into museums for the age of the Robber Baron was the only way to save them from the wrecking ball and condomania.
I wish everyone who doesn't get the point of class issues could take that tour. They would when they got done.

3. Spent our honeymoon there in 1997 |

Stayed at the Inn at Shadow Lawn up in Middletown, which was lovely. We'd hike from there every day into Newport and cover as much ground as we could before calling a cab to come and rescue us. Friendly locals, great seafood, gorgeous town. Loved it, loved it, loved it. Loved every minute of it.
On our last full day, we rented bicycles (because our feet were hamburger meat by this point) and rode from the north end of town over to Mansion Row, down to Land's End and around the southern tip of the island, up to Jackie O's childhood vacation home, and then back up to the north end of town to turn in the bikes. Dunno how we made it, but we did--just barely.
Definitely No. 1 on our list of the best times we've ever spent together.
We talk about going back all the time, but since 9/11 my beloved absolutely refuses to board a plane for any reason, and Newport is 1,497 miles away from us. It would be one long-ass drive up there and back.

Lot's of sea food, relaxing on the beach, visiting the waterfront, taking the harbor cruise, and going out to Block Island is always a treat.
