Carcieri's Budget Includes Closing DMV Satellite Offices
UPDATED: 5:57 pm EST February 7, 2006

FROM: http://www.turnto10.com/news/6813505/detail.html
PROVIDENCE -- Gov. Don Carcieri's budget plan released Tuesday calls for the state to cut jobs, benefits to state workers and some services.

One such cut includes a proposed savings of $1.3 million by closing all seven satellite offices of the Division of Motor Vehicles, leaving just the main office.

The offices in West Warwick, Warwick, Woonsocket, Middletown, Wakefield, Westerly and Warren served nearly 307,000 people last year, more than half of the business done last year at the registry. Instead, people would have to go to the main office in Pawtucket.

1. It's a lot worse than that..... and doesn't need to be
I examined the line items provided in the ProJo and if you trimmed the fat from some of the administrative, legislative and corrections side of the equation, there would be funds available not only for DMV but for the elderly, college students and after school programs.

I do believe the intention is to have most of these functions performed by AAA offices at no or little cost to our taxpayers.

I sent this proposal to the governor's office. Let the partisan politics fly!

Carl
