Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Haslam says he would sign legislation to eliminate Tennessee's permit requirements for carrying handguns in public, meaning most Tennesseans could go armed if they choose to do so.

Haslam in a discussion with members of the Tennessee Firearms Association on Monday night noted that the state's permitting process was used as justification for expanding areas where guns can be carried, such as into state parks or bars and restaurants that serve alcohol.

But in Haslam's words: "If the legislature passed that and brought that to me, I said I would sign it."

There are about 300,000 handgun carry permit holders in Tennessee. To qualify, they must pass a handgun safety course and pay a $115 fee. Permits are revoked for felony convictions and can be suspended for pending criminal charges or for court orders of protection.

5. So why are you not posing this question in the DU Vermont places page...?
Ask around on the DU Vermont page (heck, you might find out that Vermont residents can tote then firearms into a bar when enjoying a night out on the town)...and then report your findings here.

I do not live in Vermont and nor do I pretend to have any first hand knowledge about issues in Vermont.
