Who's watching the Republican gubernatorial debate tonight?
I have to admit, I'm really looking forward to seeing Medina. I think the wild card effect should be very entertaining.

2. Damnit, when I saw your subject like I thought for sure the rest would be a joke.
A corporatist, a teabagger, and a Palinista walk into a bar.

The bartender looks at them and says, "The Republican debate's next door, ya'll!"

Mmmm.... weak... needs work! :D

5. Actually, I figured Perry as the Palinista
I hear he's getting his lips surgically grafted to Sarah Palin's butt. That leaves Kay Bailout as the corporatist and Debra Medina as the teabagger.

But the challenge you pose is formidable. How do I turn this into a workable joke? Can I?

6. I listened to a bit on the radio
I was actually stunned when a audience member asked about the futile life law and Perry and Hutchinson both said they didn't know about it. Then a moderator asked Perry if he would work to over turn it, he said he didn't know we had this law, but that he would. THEN the audience member pointed out that it BECAME law when he was lt. governor!

I'd be a teeny tiny bit willing to let it slide that Hutchinson didn't know about it, but Perry, oh hell no. And the 3rd candidate also brought up that it's been on the books his whole governorship and why should we believe him now when he says he'd want to overturn it, when he hasn't done it this whole time.

I was shocked and then I laughed.

10. The other parts I heard were
Perry asked Hutchinson about the bailout she voted for. She pointed out a letter he wrote supporting the bailout. There was a lot of back and forth on it between the two of them.

When I turned on the radio they were talking about abortion. Hutchinson was saying that she wasn't really for the repeal of Roe v Wade, because it would make "abortion safe havens" in certain states and she feels that the limitations we have now on abortion are enough.

24. Just watched that clip
It was a good question and Perry is quite the idiot not remembering what that law does. He was Lt. Gov. when bush signed the law. Medina (the 3rd candidate) really gave it to him saying he had 9 years to repeal the law if he really supported life.

The clip is on the http://texasdebates.org/video.php site. It's about 36 minutes into the debate.
Wikipedia entry
The Texas Advance Directives Act (1999), also known as the Texas Futile Care Law, describes certain provisions that are now Chapter 166 of the Texas Health & Safety Code. Controversy over these provisions mainly centers on Section 166.046, Subsection (e),(1) which allows a health care facility to discontinue life-sustaining treatment against the wishes of the patient or guardian ten days after giving written notice if the continuation of life-sustaining treatment is considered medically inappropriate by the treating medical team.

No, you fuckwit, EMTALA means that hospitals HAVE to take care of you, even if you don't have money or insurance. :banghead:

9. This is great
I recorded it and I'm watching it now. In the first question both Perry and Hutchison are showed to be empty politicians pandering for votes when Medina pointed out that their "favorite program" that, they claimed, the Federal Government did well, wasn't actually being done well by the Federal Government (the military). And then thing got ugly and stayed there. These three shouldn't be politicians, let alone Governor. I can't wait until White gets on the stage with them.

Is there going to be a Democratic debate?

14. I'm sure there is
But with 7 candidates on the slate for the Democrats - the devil is in the details. I bet Bill White will control a lot about how that's going to come off. They might do something like the national debates and say if you are not polling at 5% you don't get to participate in the debate.

We'll see.

The question that tammywammy heard via radio:
BOR - Liveblogging the GOP Gubernatorial Debate
(snip)
7:37
(snip)
Karl-Thomas Musselman:
Texas Advance Directive Act question. she talked so fast I honestly don't know what her question was.

Comment From Phillip MartinPhillip Martin:
Perry on the advanced directives act: "I always stand on the side of life." Sounded a lot like Clinton's "I feel your pain."

(snip)
Comment From RBearSATRBearSAT:
Perry seems to have slept through a lot of his terms in government.

(snip)
Comment From JenniferJennifer:
I'm watching now. YES, I know about that advanced directive. It basically says that if a hospital decides a patient is going to die but a family doesn't want to take the person off life support, the hospital can send the patient to another hospital. I learned about it during the whole "death panel" BS on HCR.

(snip)
Karl-Thomas Musselman:
If you scroll up to 7:59 you can see the closing poll numbers.

Closing poll- Who do you feel won tonight's debate?
Kay Bailey Hutchison ( 48% )
Debra Medina ( 39% )
Rick Perry ( 4% )
No clear winner ( 9% )

Hell I feel like I was there. Great job BOR!

20. Advanced Directives are not the same thing as the Futile Life Law
Advanced Directives are living wills (DNRs, Directive to Physician, etc). If Rs are going after ADs, folks, this is trouble (think Terry Schiavo). The Futile Life Law, otoh, deserves to be shit-canned.

21. Thanks for clarifiying that dg
It is confusing. So the futile life law is still the one that passed under Perry right? Maybe it was bush. But either way that one is a death panel - where the hospital executives decide whether a patient is worthy of living, right?

I think "Advanced Directives" needs a better name. What was wrong with living wills? I like that. You're alive when you sign a will and it tells everyone after you're not able to, how to handle things.

22. It's called that to keep it from being confused with the Last Will
Last Wills are only effective after a person dies. The Advanced Directive takes effect immediately. You can even appoint someone to have a medical power of attorney to make medical decisions for you if you later become unable to make those decisions.

And yeah, Futile Life was signed by Shrubbie whilst Good Hair was preening in the Light Gov's office & yelling at DPS troopers who pulled him over for speeding.

16. Texas Tribune Liveblog with pics
The First Gubernatorial Debate: Liveblog
7:16 p.m. by Elise Hu
Things get a little testy as the topic turns to unemployment. Perry uses this to pivot into his main campaign message - that this is the best state to be living in to find a job. Pressed, Perry gets a little defensive - "It wears me out that we have two people on stage that want to tear Texas down.

What a joke. Perry does a great job of tearing Texas down all by himself.

He's like a Karl Rove playbook - "make your weaknesses your enemies weaknesses". He learned this from his evil master. :puke:

27. Round Two Debate from Friday 1/29
Texas Observer 1/30/10
GOP Debate II: Medina Scores, Perry Defends, Hutchison Benches Herself

The single most stunning thing about Friday night's Republican debate was the fact that Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison did not belong on the same stage with upstart libertarian Debra Medina. The second most stunning thing was the gross journalistic malpractice committed by a TV anchor who was given a golden opportunity to grill Gov. Rick Perry.

Hutchison's dismal performance—even worse than in the first debate—was probably the most significant news of the night. How could a woman who's been in elected office for 20 years running—and was once Texas' first female TV newswoman, and has no shortage of big-bucks consultants to drill her—show up for a televised debate that she had to win and just quietly, passively, self-destruct? But that's exactly what the senator did in Dallas. Looking and sounding heavily narcotized, offering absolutely no reason for anyone to support her, the lady vanished before our eyes. And her dwindling hopes of being elected governor might very well have vanished too.

(snip)
The governor was assisted mightily by the inexcusable idiocy of many of the questions tossed at him—especially the big, fat, underhanded softballs pitched by KHOU-TV anchor Len Cannon. If Hutchison had no business on the stage, Cannon should have been picked up and thrown roughly out of the picture after committing the most sickening display of butt-kissing by a journalist that I have seen in many years. If Perry's people could have dictated the questions they wanted asked, they couldn't have done better than Cannon did himself.

Len Cannon is a Perry ass-kisser then.
