Haven't posted in a lo-o-ong time, but I'm stumped
I'm an educator in tiny west central Texas district that is searching for some options re: student discipline. We haven't used corporal punishment in over 20 years and have been successful for the most part in maintaining a really good school. We are seeing an influx of transient, hard-to-deal with students that are necessitating our looking for more options. I was tasked with researching a DAEP (Disciplinary Alternative Educational Placement). No problem, can-do, tennis-shoe. Then, I find this on the website of Texas Education Agency:
http://www.tea.state.tx.us/index2.aspx?id=6711
under this link on the page:
"play video now"

And I quote:
"A positive school climate is not a coddling, pampering concept developed by some liberal from New York City."

WHAT?? WHAT??? WTF?? TEA is using THIS in a training powerpoint? I mean, the guy's drawl puts me off in the first place, but I can deal with that. But "coddling'? "pampering"? "liberal"? What do I do to kick some sand in somebody's face?

1. I didn't listen to the whole thing either
His Texas drawl was too much for me. Did they purposely go look for some stereotypical sounding Texan?

I can't believe this was aimed at administrators. It sounded so condescending. Plus the swimming letter graphics and pulsing words are so cheesy. Made me think of something a first grader might think was "cool".

Wonder how much money the TEA spent (probably with some well connected winger) on the power point video.

Good luck on your search for an alternative discipline methodology.

4. Thank you.
We will keep looking. And I will keep looking for some way to protest this with TEA.

2. That is a real Texas accent and and there is nothing wrong with it!

Attacking him for that is on par with his dumb-ass New York City liberal comment.

My family has lived in Texas since the mid 1800's and they have a Texas accent.

My parents have advanced degrees. After I lived in Chicago for a while their accents seemed very heavy but it never bothered me. It has NOTHING to do with education, intelligence or the value of what someone has to say.

3. Sorry I offended you.
My family, too, is Texan since the 1870's, so I'm sure I have a drawl. But his seems affected to me. Sorry.

was any indication you might want to focus on what he was saying. People in West Texas can be a bit sensitive about that.

If it is not difficult to find people with common sense in that part of the State.
