In Utah, the Parowan Prophet predicts disaster will prevent Obama from taking office
Source: LA Times

Reporting from Parowan, Utah -- Our trip to the Parowan Prophet began with a letter to the St. George Spectrum. It was set among missives proposing that oil companies bail out Detroit automakers, that county inmates be forced to winter in tents, that lawyers be barred from public office. A rough crowd.

This particular letter to the editor in the St. George, Utah, newspaper carried the headline " 'Prophet' shares grim forecast," and it was signed by one Leland Freeborn of Parowan, who wrote that he was known to many as the Parowan Prophet.

"I think that you should hear what my opinion about the Obama election is: that he will not be the next president. I said on my home page in August that if he lost to expect to see the 'riots' that 2 Peter 2:13 tells us about. He didn't lose. But the story is not finished yet. I still think they may begin the riots before Christmas 2008, as I said."

These riots, according to his prophecy, will encourage the "old, hard-line Soviet guard" to seize the moment and rain down nukes on the United States, killing at least 100 million of us.

I have studued apocalyptic beliefs, off and on, for over 20 years... I am always curious to know what actual manifestation produces these "prophets."

Some can be blamed on mental illness, and some on a desire to control others, I suppose.

Still. it seems an odd choice of direction for one's life.

That, or paper cuts and acid reflux.

6. 'Prophet' shares hopeful forecast...me!
Here goes. I'm sticking my neck out on a limb, but I'm forecasting that once we rid the White House of the scourge that has been hiding there for the past eight years, this nation will struggle through some difficult times in transition from "one criminal, diabolical administration" to one that has insight, intelligence and foresight.

Yes my friends, I see our nation pulling it's head out of it's ass and over the next four years, we will slowly gain back the respect and pride we once had before reagan and his followers began to dismantle the middle class and our society based on hollow "moral values" and "country first" deception to the feeble minded.

Once again, I see this country going back to it roots, as it did after the Great Depression, as it did after World War II, and now, after the cancerous criminal activity of the neocon/fascist/repug remnant party. Once again we will invest in ourselves. We will take pride in OUR product and our ingenuity, and we will revive the decreasing middle class at the expense of the crime family and his goons.

I also forecast that the cancerous neocon/fascist/repug party will badger and hound the new administration at every turn. They will use any and every opportunity to try to turn the people against the government and the new changes that are needed, and along with their propaganda media, they will be grumbling and bitching at every step with their brown shirt congressmen trying to obstruct any constructive changes for this country.

But Obama WILL BE president come January 20, 2009; the country will walk to the cliff but won't jump over; and the Utah prophet will go back to eating his goat shit from a hubcap.

There...I'm a prophet; and I'm probably 99% dead on.

7. A prophet of reality... let us hope...and work...
sometimes ya just gotta' roll up the ol' sleves and tackle these things head on.

Not the problems of the whole world, or even the whole country.

If everyone would commit to following some famous words: "Whatever good is in your power to do, do it."

Let it begin with me...

9. One of many thousands before him ....
Most all WRONG or simply too insignificant to matter ...

What happens to those who prophesize something, and the something never happens ?

Is someone keeping track ? ......

People should suffer a loss of stature when they fail to properly predict outcomes ...

That applies to Defense Secretaries, war mongerers, idiotic presidents, and phony prophets ...

12. Gee, the LA Times is now a tabloid!
One usually expects to see nutcases (or made-up nutcases) featured prominently in Weekly World News and the like. I guess the LA Times must be trying to increase subscriptions in the loony bin.

13. ZZZZzzzzzzZZZZzzzzz
This has got to be the lamest prophecy ever!

"I predict Obama will lose and riots will ensue"

OK

"Well, he didn't lose..."

You were out & out WRONG!

"....but the story isn't over...."

So the riots are going to happen anyway? WTF? So in reality you predict riots if he lost or if he won. Well, that covers all your bases, doesn't it?

And this "old, hard-line Soviet guard" nuke baloney.... is that all you can come up with? A 20th century adversary using old scare tactics? C'mon! Read a magazine....watch some TV....get a new menace. That other one's over 50 years old now. Think of something cool, not from John McCain's nightmares.

15. The guy's age (if you look at his picture in the link)...
puts him squarely in that age demographic where Cold War issues were paramount; the Russian attack meme has remained popular, in various forms since Hal Lindsey, another failed "prophet" who manages to keep making millions by "adjusting" his prophecies (and even before that actually).

Paul Boyer has written an excellent book about Cold War apocalyptic in America; I can't recommend it highly enough:

When Time Shall Be No More: Prophecy Belief in Modern American Culture. (Studies in Cultural History) by Paul Boyer

16. I find the whole phenomenon interesting on a cultural level....
as I said, I have been studying Apoclyptic beliefs, off and on, for almost 20 years. I am not a believer in these guys, I just find the phenomenon interesting...especially if no one gets hurt in the process, ala The Branch Davidians.

19. Excellent validation of the way these types work....
Hal Lindsey, who wrote The Late, Great Planet Earth back in the 1970's was oh-so-specific about "things to come," yet has continued to grow wealthy sellin books explaining why his prophecies never seem to pan out. There is always an excuse, it seems...

Thanks for finding those articles on Freeborn! :hi:

Or does he have advance knowledge of a threat which should be disclosed to the Secret Service?

Someone ought to talk with him.

24. This guy is whacko, he is my ex father in-law...really
This guy is really mental. He was involved in a plane wreck
that knocked power out in Southern Utah for days, killed his
father in law in the process. Spent 10 weeks in a coma and
awoke believing that God spoke to him while in the coma and
told him he should live plural marriage, which he did. I met
his son while in college at SUSC. He has been spouting this
stuff for 35+ years, his family won't talk to him, he has 11
children. I have been reading his info and he is really
saying the same stuff, all kinds of predictions which never
come true. He built a bomb shelter in his basement and
stocked it with guns and food. Poor guy.
