Book Award winner Egan to be honored by city
Seattle writer Timothy Egan's surprise garnering of the National Book Award last week will be celebrated at a special civic salute next month that will be led by Mayor Greg Nickels.

The event includes a talk by Egan and a reading from his winning non-fiction book on the American Dust Bowl, "The Worst Hard Time."

The Egan salute will take place at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 13 in the main auditorium of Seattle's Central Library. There will be a free reception with refreshments after the talk.

Egan, a 52-year-old national enterprise reporter for The New York Times, is the first Seattle writer to win a National Book Award since Charles Johnson took the 1990 fiction prize for "Middle Passage."

1. It's an amazing story
and Egan gets most of it from the people who lived through it. It's compelling stuff. I got it as a birthday present, but you can likely find it at the library. It's history with a very human perspective. And there are some lessons in there too, if anyone gives a damn.

3. Native son makes good
Joel Connely gave Egan a nice write-up in yesterday's PI.
