Can we please NOT have the Blue Angels this year? |
|
In light of the crash last weekend into a neighborhood?
Everything I read or hear, though, acts as if it's the Blue Angels who are going to decide - NOT the Seafair Committee, not the citizens of Seattle.

1. I am with you LisaM! Let's Ban the Blue Angels from Seafair! |
|
It is tragic about the pilot who died this weekend. I don't understand watching jets flying around. They waste a lot fuel doing that. How much is a gallon of gas now? $3.12? How many gallons do they burn every minute? How about instead of waging war on terror we declare Peace on Stupidity and Waste! Use all the money that would have paid for that gas and spend it on quality education, housing for the poor, planting trees, restoring the Amazon, rebuilding Iraq(!!!???), anything EXCEPT wasting more fuel for an elephantine recruiting tool. (that is what the Blue Angels are, you know, elephant size recruiting tools!) Peace LisaM!

2. A bit of a confession. |
|
I sort of like the Blue Angels. I know its a commercial for the military, but they're kind of a kick to watch.
However, all of Seafair is an anachronism. It was started a long time ago when Boeing ran Seattle and this was just a big blue collar town. The planes were loud, the boats were loud, the crowds raised hell and the pirates did things in public that would get them thrown in jail now. We used to go to the lake, throw a couple of cases of beer into the lake and look at girls.
Now, like you said the planes look like a waste of my money, the hydroplanes are boring, and if you want a beer you have to pay (what $10?) for a cup of warm piss behind a fence. I've grown up and I think society has moved on. We should find something else to do.

3. I like the parade and I don't even mind the fleet landing |
|
Don't personally care for the hydros. I do like the idea of a two-week festival in ANY town. But I've never liked the Blue Angels and since I work downtown, the days they practice is excrutiating for me, since I'm high up and look right out the window.
I wish they would update the pirates - add women, etc. (maybe they have?) I don't mind the arrrrrr stuff, and the outfits, and I don't even totally mind them running up to people in the crowd. In the past couple of years, I've noticed that they've all adopted a kind of non-threatening Johnny Depp look. But I wish they wouldn't have the cannons or whatever they are. I can't take my dogs to any of the neighborhood parades because the sound scares them so much, and I've seen little kids wailing away too.

4. I know a lot of folks won't like this, but I love the Blue Angels. |
|
The hydro races have been part of my life forever, and so have the Blue Angels. I do understand what you're saying, Lisa. It broke my heart when I read that a BA pilot had been killed, and I know that it is a delimmna as to whether to have them at Seafair this year.
Part of me says "no" out of respect for the pilot who died, and yet part of me says "yes" for the same reason.
Lots of us love 'em, and lots of us don't, for various reasons.
Me, I'm a speed freak, as in auto and airplane speedfreak. Not everyone is like that, however, and I respect that too.
Hard call, I think.

6. I went to the Indy 500 once! |

I'm not totally against speed and even auto races (wouldn't it be great if they could test out biofuels at the race track?) but I don't like the Blue Angels flying over where people live and work.

7. I totally understand your POV, Lisa. |
|
While I love the Blue Angels, I do often think about what would happen if one of them crashed, like just happened recently. Especially because one of their turnaround routes is right over my house!
(I've been to 3 NASCAR races -- what a blast! Got interested in racing when I was a kid, as my uncles and both my parents raced stock cars on local tracks.)

8. Wouldn't it be great if the racing circuit could get interested in bio-diesel? |
|
I like Formula One better than NASCAR personally, but I think people forget that many of the car safety features we take for granted all started at the track - roll bars, seat belts, air bags, etc. etc.
But if NASCAR could make bio-diesel acceptable, it could take a huge step towards getting people off fossil fuels.
