Impeachment hearing in Olympia 1/17
Thursday, January 17th, 2008, 3:30 p.m.
PUBLIC HEARING FOR SJM 8016, CALLING FOR A FULL INVESTIGATION AND TRIAL OF BUSH AND CHENEY
Room 2 of the Cherberg Bldg., on the State Capitol Campus in Olympia, 426-14th Ave. SW, Olympia, Washington 98504
SJM 8016 2007-08, revised for 2008 by Senator Oemig calls on Congress to conduct full a full investigation and trial for the President and Vice President. The bill, first introduced Feb. 15, 2007, was heard before the Senate Government Operations and Elections Committee on March 31, 2007, with over 500 pro-impeachment citizens in attendance.

Senators Regala, Kohl-Welles, Kline, Spanel, Fairley, Kauffman, Fraser, Prentice co-sponsored this call for an impeachment investigation.

The bill cites serious allegations of misdeeds by the Office of the Executive. A long list of violations to the US Constitution includes warrantless searches, manipulating intelligence to mislead Congress about the reasons for attacking Iraq, condoning torture, and subverting the rule of law.

The bill states that, "The citizens of Washington state expect and require their highest elected officials be subject to the laws of the land, like any citizen, and uphold the constitutional oath taken by them upon assuming office."

"We are fortunate that Senator Oemig and his colleagues in the Legislature are strong enough to provide leadership when the country needs it most," says Linda Boyd, director of Washington For Impeachment. "We all lose when the constitution is subverted."

SJM 8016 exhorts "our Representatives in the United States Congress to charge President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard B. Cheney with the above offenses and commence a full investigation and trial in the United States Senate."

Committee Chair: Senator Darlene Fairley (D)

Bill sponsor and vice chair: Senator Eric Oemig (D)

Other Committee members: Senators Roach; Kline; Benton; McDermott; Pridemore; Swecker

1. Latest info
I understand that the hearing for SJM 8016 will only be about 20 minutes long. The idea is that this second hearing will be short and sweet, and that they will vote on it in the near future.

People will want to DO something. Some people will hold a "Honk to Impeach" vigil on the four corners of Plum and Union between 2:00 and 3:00. (scroll to bottom to see message**)

WRITTEN TESTIMONY:

Folks can bring their written testimony to submit at the hearing tomorrow or send it later. I will bring a manila folder so people can submit prepared testimony. Folks can send testimony to the entire Senate Gov't and Op's Committee via email to: Cahill.Wanda {at} leg.wa.gov
or by mail: P.O. Box 4046, Olympia, WA, 98504, Attention Wanda Cahill

Testimony need not be lengthy, a simple statement in support of SJM 8016 will get the message across. Here's an example:

Honorable Senators,

Please vote to support SJM 8016 and move the bill along to a floor vote in the Senate.

We need to impeach to stop the abuse of power in the office of the President; to restore the rule of law; to end the occupation of Iraq, and to prevent war in Iran.

Impeachment is the most important item on the national agenda. I urge you to vote yes for SJM 8016 and to encourage your colleagues to do the same.

I urge you to honor your oath of office by voting yes on SJM 8016!

Thank you,

LOBBY YOUR REPRESENTATIVES: WE NEED TO HAVE A HEARING SCHEDULED FOR HJM 4027 IN THE HOUSE!
Please take time tomorrow to visit the offices of Frank Chopp and other Representatives while they are in Olympia. It's a great time to chat up the aides, make a pitch for impeachment, and find out where each Representative stands on the issue.

A half page flyer for lobbying Representatives might look something like this:

Honorable Representative_______________,

Please support HJM 4027, urging Congress to conduct a full investigation and trial of the President and Vice President.

George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney have:
(1) Knowingly used fraudulent information to persuade Congress and the American people to support the war in Iraq; and
(2) Repeatedly violated people’s civil liberties and due process – and tortured many people; and
(3) Illegally spied on U.S. citizens without a warrant; and
(4) Violated their oaths of office to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution”;

Please vote yes to schedule a hearing for HJM 4027, and encourage your colleagues to do the same.

Yes on HJM 4027!
