Richmond Calls on Dicks to Debate
MEDIA RELEASE: July 2, 2008

CANDIDATES CALL ON DICKS TO DEBATE

In a time when we are seeing record levels of dissatisfaction with the way things are being done in government, Incumbent Norm Dicks has drawn three challengers from three parties. Despite communications from their campaigns, the incumbent has not returned a single communication indicating his availability to engage in a single debate. Ballots for the primary election will be mailed in early August.

The campaign of Paul Richmond for Congress joins the other challengers in calling on the incumbent to come before the public and debate. Most recently on Wednesday June 25, the Richmond for Congress Campaign sent communications to all publicly available emails and fax numbers for the Dicks Campaign. That communication reiterated the availability of all three candidates to debate, asked for dates the incumbent had available, and asked for a response by the close of Friday June 27. The Dicks campaign made no reply, but appeared at the Fathoms of Fun Parade in Port Orchard to wave at people from a car the next day. Throughout the primary Campaign, Dicks has left the room whenever Richmond spoke addressing bodies of Democrats. In earlier campaigns Dicks has refused to appear in Newspaper endorsement meetings with opponents.

Richmond, a lawyer and journalist who has handled and covered many civil rights issues, has been campaigning against Dicks based on the effect the incumbent’s vote has had on our Constitutional rights. Last night Richmond used his three minutes at the 26th Legislative District Democrats to stand in front of a copy of the Bill of Rights and cross out all the ten original Amendments to the Constitution as he described votes the incumbent has made.

Recent votes by the incumbent have drawn the ire of many both nationally and in the district. Following Dick’s votes granting retroactive immunity to telecoms that engaged in illegal surveillance on U.S. citizens and authorizing $162 billion in continued funding for the Iraq War with no provisions for ending it Richmond received more than 500 contributions from the website Act Blue. www.actblue.com/page/paulrichmond. The Jefferson County Democrats voted overwhelmingly to send the incumbent a letter asking him to explain his votes at their next meeting or face censure.

Dicks will be appearing at 3PM Thursday in Port Townsend for the dedication of the Northwest Maritime Center.

The last time Dicks appeared in Port Townsend he received a heated greeting about his votes and his failure to support Impeachment. www.youtube..com/watch?v=MGDZewB8kG4

Richmond is hosting a discussion tonight at the Quilcene Community Center.

1. I think this is great, but Dicks knows what every incumbent Democrat knows, he is untouchable in the
primaries. Big money and the party will always back the incumbent. Good luck to Richmond.
