Morgantown DU-ers? I'm moving there in August
(Woohoo! My first post!)

I'm going to be starting grad school at WVU in the fall and am in the process of doing some cross-country apartment hunting. Can anyone advise me of reasonably-priced ($500-ish range) apartments that are NOT full of partying undergrads (or grads, for that matter)? Gotta have my quiet. ;)

Thanks in advance, folks.

1. Well, you are certainly NOT moving to liberal country
that's for sure. My sister lives there and when I go to visit her, it's a new adventure in hell.

Sorry I don't have any suggestions for your apt hunting. What about the "internets"? You could maybe hook up with a realtor that specializes in apartments?

I moved to N.H. (under stealth) about 6 years ago and I did everything on the internet. Good luck!

2. I've got a list of places from the internets
And some of them look pretty nice. I'm just trying to avoid student-world (and stay on the transit line) -- a little local knowledge goes a long way, and the apartment people always try to make out like they're renting you the Hearst Castle when they're really renting you a run-down dump (at least in my experience).

I've spent a goodly deal of time in WV and have friends there. I'm not too worried about the "non-liberal" bent of folks there. If I could survive southeast Ohio, I can survive anything. :)

I am not from that part of the state. Eastern panhandle here. not quite as "red" as where you will be, and lock the doors on saturdays when football season starts.

Doh jusy realized i was in state forums!

5. How far from campus?
My fiance has a car (and I don't), but he's going to be working (probably in Pittsburgh). If we could swing it so he dropped me off at school, that might work out.

6. Living in Motown now
two sites: www.dominionpost.com and www.da.wvu.edu are two local papers which have ads for rental properties. Probably your best bet long distance wise is to go with one of the rental companies in town. Metro rentals www.metropropertymgmt.com has nice apartments, but I would strongly advise taking a video camera and tape the condition of your apartment when you move in because they are extremely had to get along with when it comes time to get your security deposit back, but other than that they have nice units and are fairly easy to deal with when it comes to maintenance. My girlfriend rented a one bedroom at their Valley View Woods location which is within walking distance to the Medical Center PRT station (mass transit) which will take you between the Evansdale and Downtown campuses. My sister rented with them at Grapevine Village, but you would need a car to get into town. However, with your WVU student ID you to get free travel on the city bus service which does take you to some of the outlying town areas. Chestnut Hills Apartments www.goldcrestproperties.com are also within walking distance of the Med Center PRT station. I would try to stay out at Evansdale if you want to live somewhere quiet. There are plenty of apartment houses and duplexes to rent but most of them are owned by small time owners and really they are hit and miss. So, I would stay with one of the complexes then you could possibly look for a cheaper/better/closer place owned by a private individual/small company. In closing Evansdale and South Park are nice areas, Sunnyside is a big no no.

8. Well .. since you don't have a car ...
I would have recommended something downtown-ish. But since you'd like a more low-key place, I think somewhere on the Evansdale Campus within walking distance to the PRT would be a good option. I did this for a couple years there.

Here are a few pretty nice & affordable apartments I've either been in or lived in. They're within walking distance to the either the Medical School or the Towers PRT stations - (and the football stadium :))

*Chestnut Hill Apartments http://www.goldcrestproperties.com/chestnut.html

*Pierpont Apartments http://www.pierpontapartments.com/

*Barrington North Apartments http://www.morgantownapartments.com/barrington/BN.html

*Georgetown Apartments - (304) 599-2031

*Streets Apartments - (304) 599-3640

*Chateau Royale - (304) 599-7474

Good luck to you! :hi:

10. I used to have the perfect apartment.
My old place was perfect; quiet, easy to get to, unlimited free parking, yet in the middle of the Evansdale campus. It's directly in the middle of the stadium AND the collesium. I just moved out of a single that cost $490/month, including waste, gas, and water. You are responsible for electric and cable. If you bring a wireless card, you can pirate internet off of your neighbors easily. I just moved out last week because I need a 2 BR closer to school at the hospital (I look out my window and see the stadium.)

Call Prete Rental and ask if they've filled the vacant 1 BR on 380 Baldwin Street yet.
