MARTINSBURG — A string of stark disagreements filled the hourlong debate between congressional incumbent U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., and her Democratic challenger, Mike Callaghan on Wednesday evening.
Conflicting policy ideals highlighted the differences between the two candidates — conflicts that turned personal before the event was over. Issues at the forefront for both panelists and audience members were the war in Iraq and national security issues — along borders, in schools and in communities across the state.
Callaghan, a Richwood native, maintained his position that American troops should not have been in Iraq from the beginning, a sentiment expressed years ago by U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-.Va. "We’ve got quite a mess over there," he said. "We need to bring our brave men and women home over time."

A former federal prosecutor, Callaghan said his own values are those of faith, community and integrity — values he feels have been lacking in America. Callaghan said the country has lost its moral compass.
"It’s time for a change," he said. "I’m an instrument of change."
