2. What is going on in the Supreme Court race?
Edited on Tue May-13-08 11:41 PM by Staph
According to the Sec of State:

Margaret Lee Workman	104171
Menis E. Ketchum	73924
Elliot E. Maynard	57085
Robert M. Bastress	56349

According to MetroNews:

ELLIOTT E. "SPIKE" MAYNARD 184,289 32%
MARGARET L. WORKMAN 170,536 30%
MENIS KETCHUM 129,253 23%
BOB BASTRESS 83,311 15%

How does Spike go from half of Peggy Workman's total to 15,000
more? From third place to first? Is Betty Ireland beholden
to Don Blankenship?

----------------------------------------------------

Edited to add:

If you look at MetroNews' county by county totals:

Bob Bastress 83,600
Menis Ketchum 129,750
Elliot Maynard 92,606
Margaret Workman 171,278

And now they have corrected the numbers on the main page:

MARGARET L. WORKMAN 171,944 36%
MENIS KETCHUM 130,339 27%
ELLIOTT E. "SPIKE" MAYNARD 93,095 19%
BOB BASTRESS 83,986 18%

Sorry for the panic. I made the mistake of going over to GDP,
and I'm a trifle upset.

Workman, Ketchum win; Maynard out

Supreme Court Chief Justice Elliott "Spike" Maynard lost his re-election bid Tuesday night, as former Justice Margaret Workman and Huntington lawyer Menis Ketchum captured the Democratic nominations for two open state Supreme Court seats.

With 82 percent of the vote counted, Workman and Ketchum were declared winners by The Associated Press. They will face the only Republican in the race, Charleston lawyer Beth Walker, in the November general election.

"I feel very grateful because I feel the message I've been getting out is resonating," said Workman, who was the first woman to win statewide office in West Virginia when she was first elected to the Supreme Court in 1988.

5. Workman, Ketchum Advance in WV Supreme Court Race; Maynard Ousted
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Chief Justice Elliott "Spike" Maynard
has conceded the state Supreme Court race.

Former Justice Margaret Workman and Huntington lawyer Menis
Ketchum are the two Democratic nominees for the two open court
seats and will face sole Republican challenger Beth Walker in the
fall.

Maynard released a statement thanking the people of West
Virginia for allowing him the privilege and honor of serving them
as a judge and justice for nearly 28 years.

<snip>

Maynard was considered heavily favored in the race until the
release of photographs earlier this year that showed him vacationing in 2006 with Massey Energy's chief executive in Monaco. The coal producer had cases before the court at the time of the vacation.
