New WVa justices plan early swearing-in ceremonies

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia's newest Supreme Court justices plan to take their oaths of office this month.

Huntington lawyer Menis Ketchum is scheduled to take his oath on Thursday in the state Supreme Court's chamber at the Capitol in Charleston.

Ketchum led the three-way field on Election Day to be become one of two Democrats elected to the court.

Former Justice Margaret Workman defeated Charleston Republican Beth Walker to win the second 12-year term.

Workman was originally elected to the court in 1988, but stepped down before her term ended.

The Charleston lawyer plans to take her oath on Dec. 29. Like Ketchum, Workman will take her oath in the state Supreme Court's chambers.

They will officially take office on Jan. 1.
