WVU women go for WNIT title

Maybe it’s better that the West Virginia women are playing in the WNIT and not the NCAA tournament.

As an WNIT team, the Mountaineers were given the chance to play three straight home games, allowing them to bounce back from a disappointing Big East tournament setback and shake off the doldrums of a midseason slump that included a loss to Marshall and some angry public comments from coach Mike Carey.

By winning those three tournament games in Morgantown and picking up a double-overtime semifinal victory at Kentucky, the Mountaineers (21-12) have earned themselves a berth in the WNIT finals against Southwest Missouri State (24-8) at 8:05 tonight in Springfield, Mo.
