"Commission: Wisconsin justice was uneasy about ad

MADISON (AP) — Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman was uneasy with a Willie Horton-style ad attacking his opponent but eventually gave his approval anyway, state regulators said.

Gableman is accused of violating an ethics rule that prohibits judges from knowingly misrepresenting facts about an opponent. He is fighting the charge, arguing last year’s ad attacking then-Justice Louis Butler was technically true.
The Wisconsin Judicial Commission alleges Gableman willfully violated the rule and should be disciplined. In a recent filing outlining its case, the commission said Gableman’s advisers urged him to run the ad falsely suggesting Butler helped free a sex offender who later raped again.

The advisers told Gableman the ad was needed to respond to third-party ads portraying Gableman, then a Burnett County judge, as an unqualified Republican crony. They considered those ads devastating and said Gableman should hit back hard by contrasting his background as a prosecutor and judge with Butler’s as a public defender.

Gableman was unhappy with the “tone of the ad,” according to the commission, and delayed its release for a week while he considered revisions. Ultimately, he put it on television without any changes, the commission said. . . "

2. Slap on the wrist
is all this guy will get and he'll continue to sit on the bench. He and Ziegler are both ethically challenged. The rats haven't come out yet against Shirley Abrahamson but no doubt they will. I just had a letter published in the Wausau Daily Herald in support of Abrahamson. We so need her to continue her judgeship.
