True or False? Marriages of convenience are allowed under Canada’s immigration law.
.
.
.

This is false:

Marriages of convenience are not allowed under Canada’s immigration law. It is illegal to be married simply to immigrate to Canada. Spousal sponsorship is a serious legal commitment.

The facts

When someone gets married for the sole reason of immigrating to Canada, this is known as a marriage of convenience.

Under Canada’s immigration law, marriages of convenience are not allowed. Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s officers are specially trained to recognize genuine immigration applications, and they know how to detect marriages of convenience. They use a variety of techniques to uncover marriage fraud, including document checks, site visits and interviews with sponsors and applicants.

Canada’s immigration system is also set up in a way that discourages marriages of convenience. Anyone who wants to sponsor their spouse or partner to immigrate to Canada makes a serious legal commitment. As part of this commitment, sponsors must support their spouse or partner for three years, even if the relationship fails. If the couple breaks up and the sponsored person gets social assistance, the sponsor must pay back the amount of social assistance the former spouse received. Given the legal obligations, sponsorship should not be taken lightly, and everyone is responsible for ensuring that their marriage is genuine.

2. If Bill Gates gives ALL of his money to charity and gets a divorce...
and then tries to marry a Canadian woman, then his new wife will have to support him for three years even if the relationship fails?

Wouldn't a Canadian judge impute income to him on the grounds that he could probably not only support himself, but also pay alimony to his Canadian wife?

3. If Bill was in NEED of support - that's the criteria

The whole idea is that the American, or other immigrant does not become a burden on our social welfare and health system.

Many Americans would just LOVE to relocate to Canada for their Golden years just for our Health Care

- it sure ain't the WEATHER!!! :scared:

OH

another interesting tidbit in there is the "screening" of immigrants -

from the same website - -

This is true: Every visitor, immigrant and refugee must be carefully screened before coming to Canada.

The facts
This screening is an essential part of the Government of Canada’s commitment to keeping Canada safe and secure. Citizenship and Immigration Canada works closely with the Canada Border Services Agency, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service to carry out the screening process.

Canada’s visa officers abroad are our first line of defence. They are specially trained to identify people who could pose a security risk, and they send anyone suspicious for further security checks. Canada also has special officers stationed abroad to help airlines screen people coming to Canada. In the past five years, these officers have caught more than 30,000 people attempting to travel without the proper documents. Since 9/11, Canada has also increased security screening at the border.

.........

makes one ponder

:freak:
