Pravda Online Hammers Canada with snarling critique of the country
Edited on Thu Feb-25-10 12:03 AM by ClusterFreak
Get ready to do a spit take:spray:, kids...because this is pure comedy gold. This time another British scribe - Snidely McSmirkington I believe is his name :P - has teamed up with Soviet-era propoganda purveyors 'Pravda' (yes, that Pravda...)...for this opinion piece gem.

Pravda Online hammers Canada with snarling critique of the country
By: THE CANADIAN PRESS

VANCOUVER, B.C. - First it was the British newspapers hammering the Vancouver Olympics for a variety of reasons including the inclement weather and the death of a Georgian luger.

Now, Pravda Online has posted a damning critique of the city - and Canada as a whole - on its English-language website.

<snip>

"The abject cruelty shown by Canadian soldiers in international conflicts is scantily referred to, as indeed is the utter incapacity of this county to host a major international event, due to its inferiority complex, born of a trauma being the skinny and weakling bro to a beefy United States and a colonial outpost to the United Kingdom, whose Queen smiles happily from Canadian postage stamps.

"Maybe it is this which makes the Canadians so...retentive, or cowardly."

====================================
Oh, me-OW. I know you are but what am I.

Anyway...some dude named Timothy Bancroft-Hinchey wrote the bitchy, unhinged rant printed in Pravda, which is then quoted (and mocked) in the CP story. Apparently Hinchey's a British ex-pat and self-described former songwriter who's on the paper's 'editorial board'.

====================================

Read the whole CP story at the link...if you dare!

p.s. I wanted to click straight through to Pravda's English language website, to go right to the horse's...mouth(?), but the page won't load. Sorry comrades, I tried.

1. This is Timothy Bancroft-Hinchey, not Russia
It's just reposted in Pravda, which is a tabloid.

A general idea of what he says is here:

Here is a letter about it.

Pravda rubbish
By Anastassia Shinder, The Province
February 24, 2010

As a Russian-Canadian I was upset by the very critical reprint from Pravda. ru. This is hardly more than a relic with a meagre readership of hardcore communists and Stalinists.

Further, Timothy Bancroft-Hinchey is British songwriter who decided to try his hand at journalism -- he cannot speak for Russians. Incidentally, most of his articles exhibit enmity towards North America and Israel.

Ironically, people in Russia probably aren't even aware that they have insulted Canadians because the article is only available in an online English edition of Pravda. ru. I was offended twice; as a Canadian and as a Russian.

Publishing this article is highly regrettable, especially since Russian athletes and most news outlets have nothing but praise for Canadians and this country.

Anastassia Shinder, West Vancouver

2. I KNOW who wrote it. And I KNOW who he wrote it for.
And I know about the rebuttal comment in the Province. So what?

What exactly the FUCK is your point??? Or do you have one? Other than to always be the first one to clamor to point out the incredibly obvious?

MY point...is that another hackneyed British scribe has fired another scud missile Canada's way. That was my point in it's entirety. And, that it is to laugh.

p.s. And I KNEW you'd take the bait, too.

3. He writes crap for a lot of papers, or they pick it up for cheap.
The point is, the Russians have said nothing of the sort.

Now go take a chill-pill.

7. I NEVER said 'the Russians' said anything...
I said the British guy said it...and it was printed in Pravda. Never, not once, not ever, did I declare or even subtly intimate, anything else.

Of course this asswipe's opinion doesn't implicate the entirety of Russian opinion, either in that country or here in Canada as written by people like the person who wrote the Province. But that doesn't matter to you, does it? Doesn't fit your narrative.

Now why don't you go take your own chill-pill, and your bullshit agit-prop, and spread that stuff somewhere else. I'll bet you can really make the grass grow.

12. I READ what he said!!!
And?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

What of it? The CP story is a story about his Pravda editorial. That blog link has the whole article, I KNOW, so what??? What of it?? It's the full form version of what he said. I read that too, first, before I posted the newspaper link. But it isn't germain to anything at all!!

But what else is new.

Why the hell did you repost the same link I did, in order to give me a 'general idea' of what the guy said?

I...know...what...he...said...because I posted the link in the first place!

6. All of this stuff is such ridiculous nonsense....
I have been having a great time watching the Olympic coverage. From the things I have heard athletes (from all nations) say, as well as what I have witnessed in the coverage.....the Olympics in Vancouver, despite the start with unfortunate weather, are a rousing success. These people (mostly in the British tabloid press) who make their living slagging everything are certainly not the ones we should be listening to.

24. It's an old phrase I've borrowed to express exasperation with people who squabble over nothing.
It's directed at the other squabbler too. I expect that when the OP eventually makes it back to this thread, then he or she will see my post. I was going to reply to the OP's last volley as well, with a "And the same goes for you", but that would have appeared above rather than below my previous post, which would look odd.

Keep up the good fight anyway. I'm sure you have a good heart and you're obviously smart -- just, you know, you might want to pick your battles.

BTW, I've never found it vital to be particularly clever, just cleverer.

Tom Clark on CTV News last night pointed it out.

Edited on Sun Feb-28-10 07:24 AM by polly7
Too funny, I have plenty of relatives over there I used to send jokes and email to. An older aunt told me to cease and desist, even though I'm still allowed to write her 'decently'. As to the cowardly, the nutbag should ask the British why they sent Canadians (who before the Quebec Act) were the first to volunteer and immediately sent to the front lines in the battles most assured to wipe out the most Allied fighters. The author should do a little research before he writes, he comes across as a fool.

26. I find it funny that only Russia and England have been on the attack
Are their games shaping up to be so shitty that they're slagging ours to death in an attempt to soften the blow when its their turn? Frankly, Russia's will be blight with corruption and typical Russian incompetence and Englands will just be blight with red tape, restricted liberties and pompous asses that will make it a character of itself...

27. Oh man, give them a break.
It's a bit early.

Leave those critiques to the Timothy Bancroft-Hinchley's.

It's just a few crappy fifth-rate journalists that are doing the complaining, not the entire countries.

29. Well I watched it, but I didn't get the same thing from it.
The main conclusion towards the end seemed to be that the British tabloid press will be just as harsh on any British failures as they were on the Greeks and Canadians.

Again, it's not the Brits that are slagging Canada's Olympics. It's the tabloid press.
