Cannon initially said in French that Canada had the support of the United States, but he later backtracked when asked another question.

"I don't want to indicate that we did or did not get support from the United States," Cannon said.

"We had 135 written confirmations of support and 15 verbal confirmations. I don't want to go into who supported us during the course of that vote. I'll leave that to the individual countries to indicate their positions … given that it is a secret vote."
