CRTC appointment smacks of cronyism, NDP says
A Montreal lawyer and friend of Stephen Harper’s communications director has been named vice-chair of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission – an appointment the NDP says was marred by improper interference by the Prime Minister’s Office.

“There is a sort of glazed over effect that Canadians have with the outrageous behaviour of Harper but I this one pretty much takes it,” NDP heritage critic Charlie Angus said.

The Prime Minister’s Office wants friendly faces on the CTRC because there is a decision coming down that would remove the obligation of any broadcaster or newspaper to fact-check stories or be accurate in their coverage as long as the reporting does not endanger lives, Mr. Angus said.

“We see their intense interest in Fox-style news. Mr. Harper has already asked for personal updates on the process at the CRTC,” the New Democrat charged. “His former communications director suddenly leaves and then announces that he is going to lead up the run for Sun TV. Then the CRTC announces well maybe we don’t need any broadcast standards.”

1. Mubarek light
Our PM is basically Mubarek light, and if he ever gets a Majority mandate he'll make some of the dictators in this world look like cream puffs.
From the moment he came to office he has stacked courts, the civil service, our Senate with like minds.
He's turned pretty much every agency, except for the Parliamentary Budget Office, and the Auditor Generals Office, with cronies. And the fact is, if he gets a chance, he will replace both the PBO and the AG with cronies.
The man has the ethics of Hitler, and the corporate allegiance of Mussolini, and is the most dangerous (to democracy) man to ever fill the Prime Minister's chair.
However, the real danger in Canada is voter apathy. Harper has taken power with less than 19% of support from eligible voters, mostly because half of Canadians didn't even bother to vote.
The second factor, and nearly as much of a problem, is the weak opposition. Six months ago the Opposition had Harper dead to rights for contempt of parliament when he failed to cooperate with a parliamentary order to turn over all documents related to the Afghan Detainee issue. The Opposition allowed Mr. Harper to get away with a blatant snub of Parliamentary authority.
What's more, Harper has recently lost an appeal of his party's attempt to cheat on the last election. The CON party extorted the taxpayers of Canada by playing fast and loose with Election finance laws. The end result is he won an election by cheating, and the Opposition has failed to call him on it.
We can only hope that, at some point, the Opposition will finally realize they represent the Majority in our Parliament, and start acting like the Majority they are. There is no way Harper should be allowed to govern without Majority support. We don't need an election to change our government. All we need is for the majority to start acting like the majority, and seize the day.
If people really want to see what is happening in Canada right now, they need go no further than look up the early years of the NAZI party in Germany, when a minority leader seized power, and the parliament of the time just allowed it to happen.
