Ex-PM aide Carson cleared by current RCMP chief
The current head of the RCMP was responsible for giving security clearance to a former aide of Stephen Harper despite his criminal past.

CBC News has learned William Elliott, who was serving as national security adviser in the Privy Council Office in January 2006, was the official who gave the green light to Bruce Carson working in the Prime Minister's Office. The RCMP is currently probing allegations that Carson was involved in illegal lobbying.

Elliott, who became RCMP commissioner in 2007, is stepping down in the summer.

The Canadian Press reported earlier this week that Carson was convicted on five counts of fraud — three more than previously known — and received court-ordered psychiatric treatment prior to his hiring as an adviser to Harper.

1. Or not...
OTTAWA - A senior intelligence official denies that the RCMP commissioner green-lighted a security clearance for Bruce Carson, despite his criminal past.
News reports say William Elliott, now the top Mountie, approved Carson's Secret-level clearance in 2006, paving the way for his job as a top adviser to Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
At the time, Elliott was national security adviser in the Privy Council Office.
But the senior security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Canadian Press — both before and after the reports surfaced — that Elliott was not involved in the file.

2. The real story is that Harper knew Carson for 25 years
so there is absolutely no way he could not have known the truth about him. As usual, Harper is passing the buck to someone else.IMO
