They've backed down from the proposal already because of the massive uproar that it has caused but they've already floated the idea of allowing some (read Russell Group) universities to privatize so they can compete. In reality it would move them into the same moulds as Yale and Harvard where you go if you have the money & the academic qualifications are a secondary consideration.
How else are you going to maintain the rich elite in a class above us proles?
