"Victorian Premier Steve Bracks has this morning announced his resignation.

Mr Bracks announced his shock decision to stand down at a press conference at Melbourne's Treasury Place about 10.40am.

He said he had already informed colleagues and described it as the right decision.

"It's right for the state, it's right for the Government, and it's right for the Labor Party. And also it's the right decision for Terry and our family."

This really does deserve the headline "Shock" - what a shame; I really like this man, and in the
matter of the Murray-Darling water, I think he's the only premier who has really stood up for
States' rights, and tried to protect his state from being sold out, most likely to private
enterprise.

1. Is this just a break before he takes a federal seat at the next

election?

2. We could hope, but it may have more to do with his son,

and his alcohol problems. The boy has been arrested three times now for drunkenness and is clearly
in need of help.

Perhaps further down the track he may make a federal run - he really is one of the best leaders in
a long time, and I've often wished he was in NSW instead of Victoria.
