IRON LAKE, Wm Kent Krueger |
|
Good read. The author has another book due in Sep, so I got his oldest books from the libary to see what the series is all about - Cork O'Connor, half Irish, half American Indian, takes place in Minnesota.
I really liked the first book, IRON LAKE. I have 2 more older books on hand to read, then I start on James Lee Burke's older books, of which I have only read the oldest one, Neon Rain.
Anybody familiar with Krueger's writing?

It goes a good job of capturing the feel of northern Minnesota in winter.

5. TX. No offense to Texans but I miss everything about northern MN... |
|
the forests (yes, there are lots of pines in east TX but not here) and lakes and believe it or not, the snow. Here, the summers are so hot that I don't even consider going out until late afternoon. The winters are better temperature wise but brown....so I'd rather have the snow. The falls are a complete disappointment. Color here is a mere wash of drab color....not the spectacular, take your breath away, vibrant colors of red, orange and yellow of up north. Plus, I liked the politics better in MN although I think there is some hope for Texas swinging back to pre-LBJ.

6. Good Minnesota writer, and nice in person |
|
(I met him at a signing at Uncle Edgar's bookstore near Chicago and Lake.)
By the way, if I may put in a plug for Uncle Edgar's/Uncle Hugo's on Chicago Ave. about a block north of Lake Street.
They're a ramshackle store, with half (Uncle Hugo's) devoted to sci fi, and half (Uncle Edgar's) devoted to mysteries. The people who work there have an absolutely encyclopedic knowledge of these genres. I mentioned a certain little-known writer whose work I had enjoyed in the early 1990s, and asked if they had any of his later works, and the guy behind the counter said, "He hasn't written anything since the early 90s. I'm not sure why." :wow:
