I'm reading BROTHERS KARAMAZOV, have about 200 pages left. |
|
I posted this in the Lounge but I'm going to be courageous and post it here.
Here's my :silly: take on it:
Fyodor is a turkey, Dmitri is a turkey, and they both are probably active alcoholics.
Ivan and Alyosha are OK.
Katerina whatever is an idiot; she ought to appreciate Ivan, instead of hanging on to Dmitri.
And many of the characters have diarrhea of the mouth.
Poor Smerdyakov never had a chance.

TBK is one of my favorite books of all time... even with all the verbal diorrhea and dysfunctional family stuff and sexism.
As for Dmitri, well, he does start off a turkey, but he undergoes a transformation. Keep reading and you'll see.
I agree about Smerdyakov, but he did kind of bring it on himself... just downright crazeee.
The ending has a rather deus ex machina feel to it, but hey, we really do root for poor Dmitri at the end, don't we?

2. I loved that book, except for the religious ecstasy thing in the middle. |
|
The details of Smerdyakov's conception stick with me to this day.
Hope you end up liking it.

4. Spoiler: They all become jugglers in the end |
|
You never see it coming. One of the greatest twists in literature.

I'll never forget the first time I read Ivan's interview with the devil. . . one of the most badass literary experiences I've ever had.
