recc: a murder mystery in today's Saudi Arabia |
|
Finding Nouf by Zoe Ferraris
there were times when I felt I was reading a Science Fiction/Fantasy novel. life in S.A. is so different it is other worldly.
women and men spend 24/7 365 worrying whether they are sinning or not or thinking impure thoughts or not. but for women the pressure is doubled. women have such longing, fear, swallowed anger, fear, longing, fear, resistance, fear......
where men have the constant company of each other but have such conflicted, fearful thoughts concerning women who are kept apart from them.
this mystery is marvelous, with unexpected twists and turns. you will end up having strong feelings for the two 'detectives', a man and a woman who did not know each other before the murder.
(and I'm curious to try a miswak stick, which is sold online)

1. I read the sequel, City of Veils--fascinating |
|
It started with the story of an American couple who come to Saudi Arabia, and then the husband disappears.
I think I'll try to find this one, either in paper or as an eBook.

2. Sounds fascinating. I know several Arabic writers... |
|
and I keep suggesting to them that they write a mystery novel set in Saudi Arabia, featuring a female Miss Marple type. I think it would be interesting to watch how a woman goes about finding information, given the restrictions on her life.

4. These books do feature a female main character |
|
and detail the difficulties she faces finding anything out.
