Book recommendation: Something of Value |
|
Old book, but still available on Amazon. It was made into a movie, but when I picked it up at a flea market I had never heard of the thing. But the first few pages grabbed me (almost never happens) so I bought it.
Story of the Mau-Mau uprising in Kenya, post WWII. Two fictional families, black and white, whose lives intertwine. According to those who know Kenya well, it is extremely accurate, despite the fact it is fiction.
What struck me, while reading it: our little "adventure" in Iraq. Kenya and Iraq are very different countries, but so many mistakes (and there were many) made in Africa remind me of the Mideast.
Well worth the read if you can get ahold of it.

I read it years and years ago. It's in that category of historical novels that educated me about something that I had known nothing about previously.

4. Read this when I was young, highly recommend it, enabled |

me to understand the MauMau and group pride in general.
This is one of those wonderful books that illustrates how fiction is sometimes the best way to convey truth.
