Funny and full of wild crazy sex read: "The Pitcher Shower"
Edited on Tue May-09-06 01:49 PM by Sequoia
by Donald Harington

Don't read the reviews or it will spoil all the fun and surprises. I can't believe I've never heard of this author. He was a kid in the Ozarks and lost his hearing at 12 but he's got the accents and word usage down pat. This book is about Hoppy who travels the roads during the Depression showing "pitchers" to the local yocals. Farmers, kids, preachers, hot women and Shakespere all add up to a roaring good tale.

Ozark lore: Why is it not good to keep waving good-bye to a person until they're out of sight? Anyone know? When my parents would drop us off at the boarding school I'd wave and wave good-bye until the car went out of sight over the hill.

1. Thank God some one else is reading Donald Harington!
I've read him for over 30 years & think he's one of America's best writers.
If you liked this, please try "With" or "Some Other Place, the Right Place" or "The Cockroaches of Stay More" or "Butterfly Weed". Most of his books are centered about the mythical town of Stay More. His characters sometimes re-appear in other stories. Harington is not afraid to push limits. Some of the subject matter can be a touch shocking. The results are always heartfelt. I wish I could read him again for the first time.

2. Not just the Ozarks, FDR and ER did not wave until out of sight...
when King George and Queen Elizabeth left Hyde Park. ER specifically mentioned this in her memoirs.

Weird superstition.

3. I've recently discovered Donald Harington...
I actually posted "Any Other Donald Harington Fans" in this forum a couple of weeks ago and there were no replies. :(

Anyway, I've read "With" and "The Cockroaches of Stay More" and was thoroughly charmed. I decided to read all of his stuff in chronological order ...I'm currently in the middle of his first novel, "The Cherry Pit", which is not nearly in the same league as his others...but it's a first novel....

I'm not sure why he isn't more widely known.
