The ANWR vote has motivated me to read Walden |
|
After the ANWR vote I become motivated to read Walden by Henry David Thoreau. Even though it was written over 125 years ago, the basic principles have meaning today. I wish all Neo-cons were forced to read this as if it were the Bible.
It is taking me a little longer to read the book cause I am not used to the old fashioned way it is written and it takes awhile to digest every word. But so far, I think the book is great and I have written down many quotes from it (I love quotes!). Here is one that I thought was meaningful today... "We no longer camp as for a night, but have settled down on earth and have forgotton heaven."

The sky is the daily bread of the eyes.
One might think the atmosphere was made transparent with this design, to give man, in the heavenly bodies, the perpetual presence of the sublime. Seen in the streets of cities, how great they are! If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore; and preserve for many generations the remembrance of the city of God which had been shown! But every night come out these envoys of beauty, and light the universe with their admonishing smile.

Haven't read the book in many years but love the quotes (thanks, riverwalker.) Keep 'em coming!
Walden Pond is still a lovely place. When I lived in Boston I used to drive out there for a swim from time to time in summer.
