I need recommendations for a book on British history
Actually looking for two. One that is about 100-200 pages long and gives a good summary. Another that is 400-600 pages long. These are to help students that participate in an academic contest. Any help would be appreciated.

2. What age group?
1066 and All That is a funny book, but not so much for academic use, imo.

There are so many texts, overviews, monographs . . . the answer really does depend on the age group you're working with right now.

The BBC has a pretty good website overview, here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/
Lots of fun, interactive tools for kids, tweens, teens (and us grown-ups who like that sort of thing)

This is another overview website that's not bad at all: http://www.britannia.com/history/
A bit more wordy, but lots of information that might work for you in lieu of a book.

The Reader's Guide to British History is a fairly recent (2003), well organised and comprehensive annotated bibliography for books on British history. Two volumes, published by Routledge, editor David Loades. I suspect you would find it very useful for your search.

3. I'll check out the websites
This is for 12th graders that are pretty advanced. They need to understand british history and it's impact on the Constitution.

4. I do a project with my college kids
(who aren't that much more advanced than yours) that looks at some of the primary foundation documents in Britain and compares them to the Declaration and the Constitution. In addition to the Magna Carta, I use the English Bill of Rights, the Petition of Rights, the Declaration of Arbroath, Ordinances of William I, and Henry I Charter of Liberties.

I introduce the documents in class and put them into their historical context - which gives you the opportunity to cover important points in British history - and then ask them to read the documents and look for places in the US documents that echo the concepts they found in the UK documents.

I also include a pretty substantial discussion of the Enlightenment and introduce them to some of the heavy hitters - Voltaire, Kant, Hume, Smith, Hutchison, etc. Some discussion of coffee house culture also seems to help them get a handle on where people's heads were at during the period in question! There's a great book, Civil Tongues and Polite Letters in British America by David S. Shields, that might be helpful in that regard. Lawrence E. Klein has also done some wonderful work with coffee house culture, in article form, that is very interesting.

8. Availability of 1066 And All That
I'm new here and plan on reading 1066 And All That. Is it available at most major book sellers?
