I suggest anyone who has never read this should pick it up immediatley. Bill Bryson tells a funny story about his experience on the Appalachian Trail, rediscovering America, and goes into great legnths into opening our eyes about the destruction of our forest (espically by the Forest Service).

1. All Bill Bryson's books are great |
|
I've enjoyed every one, both as books and as audiobooks. I thought his book on Australia (In A Sunburned Country, ISBN: 0767903862) was one of the funniest things I've ever read.

Listened to that on tape while driving home for Thanksgiving. Nearly drove off the road a few times, I was laughing so hard: that whole scene about the giant steel bull was one of the funniest things I've heard.

2. I listened to that on tape during a VERY long car trip. |

Listening to Bill Bryson, if possible, is even better. I've never been able to say that about anyone except Garrison Keillor.

Bill Bryson is one of my favorite authors, and A Walk In the Woods was my introduction to his books. I read it while on a 5 day hike on the Appalachian Trail (Springer Mountain to Neel's Gap, GA), and loved every page of it. I've since read much of Bryson's other work - check out "Neither Here Nor There" for an account of his travels across Europe, or "The Mother Tongue" for his take on the evolution of the English language.

Wildly funny in parts, poetically beautiful in other parts.
I loved it.

Try "A Short History of Nearly Everything."
I also listened to A Walk In The Woods in the car on a cross country trip. Damn funny. Yeah, I shat in the woods.

9. Have you read his book The Lost Continent (I think that's the title) |
|
Bill travels around the USA, stops in these little towns, stays in fleabag motels and eats in greasy spoons. It's a hilarious take on American culture. A really funny book.
