Makeup Artist Slams Claim "Michael Jackson Didn't Want to be Black" - explains effects of Vitiligo
Edited on Mon Oct-26-09 12:38 PM by Triana
One of Michael's makeup artists SLAMS the tabloids et al for claims that "Michael Jackson didn't want to be black" and explains IN DETAIL about Michael's VITILIGO and the HORRIBLE psychological effect, as well as physical effect, this disease has on a person. Michael really suffered with this - then had to put up with the tabloid media and the IGNORANTS who read that trash ridiculing him for it on TOP of that. God. WHY are people so damn CRUEL and IGNORANT? And WHERE was this woman BEFORE JUNE 25TH?

Arlington, TX (PRWEB) July 7, 2009 - Sandi Hammons, celebrity permanent makeup artist and her company, Premier Pigments, the manufacturer of the permanent makeup worn by the late Michael Jackson, are speaking out against widespread assertions that "Michael Jackson didn't want to be black."

"That is so far from the truth," says Hammons. "Anyone making those assertions obviously doesn't understand the disease Michael suffered from or the treatment options available to him."

Michael Jackson was diagnosed in 1986 with vitiligo, a chronic skin disease that causes loss of pigment resulting in irregular pale patches of skin. Jackson openly discussed the disease in an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 1993 following accusations that he wanted to be white. His attempt to "set the record straight" was primarily ignored and rumors that "he didn't want to be black" continued to plague him throughout much of his adult life. Most recently, the allegation was reportedly made by Quincy Jones, the record producer who collaborated with Michael Jackson on Thriller, Bad and Off the Wall.

•••

Sandi Hammons: "Few people understand the psychological trauma associated with the disease of vitiligo, including the physicians who treat it". For the past twenty-five years, she has consulted with physicians and thousands of individuals who suffer from vitiligo. "There are even some medical professionals who still consider the disease to be nothing more than a cosmetic nuisance," said Hammons, "But the truth is, many people diagnosed with the disease suffer greatly. A deep sense of shame and hopelessness (including depression and suicidal ideation) along with a preoccupation with appearance and available treatments are really quite common. Vitiligo is especially traumatic for darker skinned individuals, as the contrast between pigmented and depigmented skin can be quite drastic."

Jackson was widely criticized for his use of bleaching medications and chemical peels. "What people don't understand is that there are few, if any, treatments that are effective, especially for widespread cases like Michael's."

There are three common types of treatment for vitiligo: 1. Repigmentation as in the case of PUVA and UV lights (Typically ineffective on widespread cases) 2. Micropigmentation (i.e. cosmetic tattooing - recommended on small areas that accept cosmetic pigment) 3. Depigmentation, as in the case of using bleaching creams to remove smaller pigmented areas (typically recommended for widespread cases similar to Jackson's).

•••

Hammons has great compassion for Jackson and his battle with the disease. "To deal with the psychological impact of this disease is significant; to deal with the very public and cruel opinions of others must have been overwhelming."

>>>>>>>>>>"Trauma drives addiction," adds Hammons. "In my opinion, those who judged him unknowingly contributed to his preoccupation with appearance, his eventual addiction to cosmetic surgery and prescription drugs, and ultimately his early death. We all need to have more compassion for those who suffer from this baffling and misunderstood disease."

2. I don't know how he dealt with it all. It was just constant media abuse and lies...
...no WONDER he was reclusive. And if he did end up addicted to SOMETHING, I'd challenge ANYONE to deal with what Michael Jackson had to deal with all his life and NOT be reclusive and addicted to something. It's horrible what the guy had to deal with.

3. I agree ~ my aunt had it and she was so ashamed
That was many years ago and she lived on a farm in VA.

How he must have felt to be in the public eye.

4. I have psoriasis and it's similarly unpredictable and disfiguring...
Edited on Mon Oct-26-09 03:32 PM by Triana
...though (crossing fingers) my psoriasis isn't (YET) nearly as extensive as it COULD be or as Michael's vitiligo was. Like vitiligo, it's an ever-changing, unpredictable, disfiguring skin disease which is poorly understood (better understood now than in the past though) and for which there is no cure. It migrates and mutates constantly. It's not only physically disfiguring but psychologically devastating - particularly for teens and pre-teens, which is when it first appeared on me and I've had it since.

Living with a skin disease like this is HORRID even for a private person. For a person who is as public and popular as Michael Jackson - and with tabloids and media constantly telling rediculous lies about it - it must have been PURE HELL.

My heart breaks for him still and it always has over this issue. People are just damn ignorant and cruel and there's no reason for it.

Yet, no one would believe him. He'd tell people and they'd just nod like Oprah did: "uh-huh" - and then the media/tabloids would just keep repeating the lies - including Oprah and Barry Gordy of all people. It's pure ignorance and lack of any compassion at all for the person suffering with a disease that they cannot possibly help.

5. Re:Makeup Artist Slams Claim "Michael Jackson Didn't Want to be Black" - explains effects of Vitilig
vitiligo may be present on the body of anyone. If the makeup artists are claiming that there was vitiligo on Michael Jackson's body for which he was refusing to take the black colour in the makeup then there is no problem. If they are showing enough proof then it is okay else they have face the legal action against it.

6. I have vitiligo
Getting worse all the time. Huge patches on my hands, arms, around my eyes and many patches not visible to most people. It sucks. And I'm white. Can't imagine if I were black and famous.

8. MJ did not let vitaligo stop him
Most people in the spotlight would have given up and gone into hiding. However, MJ did not do this. Instead, he lived his life along with all of the B.S. rumors about him. It saddens me greatly that he is gone now and that this trial going on now may or may not do justice to him.

RIP Michael!

10. Michael Jackson had an extremely abusive father while growing up.
All of Michael Jackson's family was abused by his father, but Michael Jackson, for some reason(s), ended up getting the worst of it. As a result of constant physical abuse, Michael Jackson saw his father every time he looked at himself in the mirror, which scared him so that he no longer wanted to be black, and so had a whole lot of operations that made him all white and feminine-looking.

Michael's vitiligo was extensive and started when he was a kid

He also had discoid lupus which causes skin rashes, lesions and scarring too.

12. thanks for posting this site
Lots of info. here re: the late King of Pop and also the disease vitiligo.

It just gives even more credibility to my statement about how most people with this skin disease would sure not care to be in the public's eye.

And to think, MJ had lupus on top of all of these physical problems.

It makes me sad to know he was suffering so much and no one cared to acknowledge his physical condition but were certain to encompass him with a bunch lies that were never substantiated. & :evilfrown:

I really hope that Michael Jackson is resting in peace -- away from all of the tabloid crap and lies.

Thanks again for posting this info. :D

16. You'd have plastic surgery too
Edited on Sun Nov-13-11 12:03 PM by CountAllVotes
If you had vitiligo and you were white, here is what you'd be looking like:

Can you imagine how severe it would be if you were black? I suspect you'd be going to a lot of skin doctors, having surgeries, etc.

Of course people that cannot see beyond the hate fail to see the reality of what MJ was living with and it was no picnic, that you can believe in.

On edit:

>>Michael's older son, Prince, that apparently has inherited his father's disease. The boy, aged 13 shows a depigmentation under his arm, a common place for vitiligo spots to occur. If indeed the boy suffers from vitiligo, this puts two rumors to rest: that Prince isn't really Michael's son and that Michael bleached his skin because of his obsession to become white.

:(

How very sad at best.

17. He hated
the way he looked because he was teased horribly about it.

That's why he had plastic surgery done. But sometimes plastic surgery can go too far and make things worse.

But people don't care about that either.
