LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Times reports that Bonanza star Pernell Roberts has died.

Roberts' wife Eleanor Criswell tells the paper that the actor died Sunday of cancer at his Malibu home. He was 81.

The ruggedly handsome star shocked Hollywood by leaving TV's Bonanza in 1965, at the height of the classic Western's popularity, then found fame again years later on Trapper John, M.D.

Roberts was the last surviving Bonanza cast member.

OMG, I am feeling the years. I remember watching Bonanza (one of the few early shows in color).

I think I remember watching him on the show Paladin.

7. One of his better Westerns was "Ride Lonesome" with Randolph Scott
Edited on Tue Jan-26-10 05:27 AM by happyslug
For more on that film see:

Parnell Roberts portrays an outlaw who see a way to get Amnesty for his past crimes if he turns in someone worse then himself (Played by James Best). The problem is Randolph Scott has the criminal, during the middle of an Indian rebellion. Worse, the criminal that has to be turned over to the authorities, is the brother of the meanest man in the territory (Played by Lee Van Cliff in one of his meanest roles). Interesting story of a person playing a hand he knows he has to win, but sees the odds getting worse and worse the longer he plays. The hard part is he has to stay in the game no matter how long the odds get for it is the only way he has of ever winning a new start. Parnell's Partner in Crime in the film is played by James Coburn, in James Coburn first film.
