JOB DESCRIPTION – INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

November 16, 2006

The Washington Association of Churches (WAC) is a 31-year old Christian ecumenical association that brings together denominations, congregations, ecumenical organizations, other faith organizations and individuals to work toward society based on justice, mercy and humility. Our mission is: “The WAC, in partnership with spiritual communities and other sectors, cultivates an influential movement of the faithful across Washington State. This movement will bring to life God’s sacred vision by organizing social action, discerning and promoting public policies, and building ties with other movements compelled by the vision of a just, compassionate, humble society.” To that end, the WAC’s top priorities are addressing the deepening crises of growing hunger and the lack of affordable housing and health care. The WAC also works on other issues such as peace, protecting the environment and other justice issues.


In October 2006, our long-time Executive Minister resigned and moved to Oregon with his family. The WAC is seeking an Interim Executive Director to guide the organization during this transition period until a permanent Executive Minister is in place. We anticipate that the transition will take at least 4 months at a minimum. A major priority of the Interim Executive Director’s work will be conducting a thorough review of the Association’s multiple internal policies, systems and procedures.

Job Title: Interim Executive Director

Job Description: The WAC is seeking an Interim Executive Director to lead the association during this transition period. The Interim Executive Director is responsible for the following:
· Conduct a thorough review of the WAC’s internal policies, procedures and practices including but not limited to budget, finance, fiscal sponsorship; make recommendations for change to the Governing Board; and implement approved changes.
· Develop and implement the organization’s programs, including leading the 2007 planning process, meeting annual goals and objectives, and supervising the organizing, leadership development and campaign activities. Includes responsibility for supervision and evaluation of program and administrative staff.
· Develop the organizational budget, implement and monitor to ensure adherence to it, as approved by the Board of Directors.
· Develop a diversified fundraising strategy for the organization that includes organizational contributions, grants, major donors, and grassroots contributors. Implement components, as appropriate and/or as assigned by the Board of Directors.
· Staff the Governing Board, including preparing for meetings, and implementing Board decisions.
· Ensure all legal obligations are met, including those reporting requirements associated with a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and file tax returns.
· Work with Governing Board to develop strengthen and leverage relationships with key allies.
· Organize the search process for a new permanent Executive Director.
· Perform other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.

Job Qualifications: We are searching for an inspiring progressive leader who understands church-based, grassroots and coalition organizing, with the following experience and qualifications:
· At least 5 years experience organizing, including at least 2 years of direct experience in a church or ecumenical group/setting, or comparable experience.
· Excellent written and oral communication skills.
· Significant experience in financial management of and fundraising for a mid-sized non-profit organization.
· Experience directing or supervising public policy issue campaigns.
· Demonstrated effectiveness in initiating, motivating, leading and working well with a wide variety of people.
· Demonstrated competency in dealing with people from diverse faith and cultural backgrounds which include immigrants, refugees and persons with limited English speaking abilities.
· Demonstrated problem-solving and partnership development abilities.
· Working long or irregular hours and travel statewide.

Compensation: Salary is DOE. Benefits include health and dental coverage, vacation and sick leave. The configuration of the compensation package is negotiable.
