Kingdom of God on Earth? Some Want a U.S. Theocracy
Dominionist Christians are working to turn the United States into a theocracy. These are the same people who continually spout off about America being a "Christian nation" founded by men and women who shared their warped fundamentalist view of the world. Their latest target: video games.

1. A good way to get a religious war in this country
because they will never settle on which christian religion is the right one

2. The easy solution is to just burn some heretics.
It used to be a favored method of Christian theocrats, so I'm sure the Dominionists wouldn't mind using it.

4. They will take to it with relish from the outset
Remember how shocked we all were at the Abu Ghraib torture photos? The vicious camaraderie of the guards, the obvious pleasure they took in wielding power and pain over the terrified inmates, the thumbs-ups, the laughing faces, the blood and death, the fact that they recorded these casual horrors on film to serve as mementoes,,,the past is prologue, folks.

21. Actualy most of the Dominonist/Reconstruction movement comes from
the Calvinist tradition. It spans a lot of protestant denominations, but they all agree on the basics so they are united enough to be a big problem.

I visited a typical right wing dicussion board called 'Yet Another Politics Board'. There are many conservatives who know LITTLE about Christianitity ot the scriptures. But they are promoting theocracy much like that depicted in Margaret Atwood's novel The Handmaid's Tale.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Handmaid%27s_Tale

Some self declared 'Christians' have far more in common with the Taliban than they have with the philosophy of Jesus Christ.

6. I won't lose sleepmover it either.
I figure I need my rest for when it happens. This country is unique among the western democracies in that it is religion crazed. The vast majority of it's citizenry self identify as kkkristian and most attend some form of scam operation, er, tax dodge, er, church weekly. I get dragged to one occasionally when visiting ( and I go because it's like visiting a zoo or museum) and I have yet to be on one where they at not calling for protests against doctors, or politicians, or scientists, or singers, or someone because someone, somewhere might want to touch their kids ( besides themselves or the pastor I mean because thats OK in Gaaahhhhhhds eyes).

And you don't think that country that is chock o block full of batshit crazy that is organized, tax free, and armed could never take this country to theocracy? Yah. Yur probably right. I mean it's not like anyone could even mention the 3rd rail of American politics and survive.... It'll never happen.

22. Recently Stott died.
He was Anglican, British, it would appear. I never heard of the man, but NPR and many others seemed to bill him as a refreshing, non-RW alternative to much evangelical thought.

I read extended quotes from his works in some of the paeans written extolling his greatness.

Things on the order of making sure that society reflects Christian, Godly values, being important in making society good and just and merciful.

In this, he and the Reconstructionists (at least the original ones in the late '70s up through the late '80s) are in agreement. The devil's in the details. So to speak.

Dominionism is completely in line, and indeed a child of, the American right-wing evangelical movement.

8. They need to read their Bibles a little more closely.
"Christian Nation"? There's no such thing to be found in the New Testament. We're called to be good citizens and obey the law as far as we can without sinning against God. When our commitment to God trumps our ability to obey the law, we are to cheerfully accept the consequences. Dominionist thinking is nothing but legalism and whining.

27. Thank Bob Perry's prayerfest is looking like a flop....
http://www.salon.com/news/2012_elections/index.html?story=/politics/war_room/2011/08/03/perry_prayer_event_flop

Texas Gov. Rick Perry's big prayerfest -- the Jesus-centric event that has attracted support from a range of extremist pastors -- is scheduled for this Saturday at Reliant Stadium in Houston.

But the AP checks in on The Response event and finds that, if preregistrations are a guide, it's shaping up to be a potentially embarrassing flop:

But with only 8,000 RSVPs for a stadium that seats 71,500 people, virtually no politicians planning to attend, and a slate of organizers who hold out-of-mainstream views on religious freedom, gay rights and even Adolf Hitler, the event has become a potentially risky gamble if Perry is serious about running for the White House.

Perry invited every governor in America to the event, but the only one to publicly commit to attending, Sam Brownback of Kansas, now seems to be waffling.

32. You know that could be taken as an intent to commit murder.
I'll just go right down the middle and work on weeding out the extremists.

Taken with your constant portrayal of atheists who openly criticize religion as extremists similar to totalitarian mass-murderers and the fact that similar language is used by right-wingers who foment violence, the above statement of yours could definitely be seen as a threat of violence.

Of course, I'm sure you'll insist you were speaking figuratively. I seem to recall those crosshairs were meant as surveyors marks too.
