Govt to consider scrapping state religion provision: Shafique
Saturday, November 19, 2011
Bangladesh

Law Minister Shafique Ahmed has said the government will consider scrapping the constitutional provision that has given Islam the status of state religion, if the High Court passes any directive to do so.

Lawyers concerned should move the pending case challenging the provision with the HC for its immediate disposal, the minister said.

He was speaking at a meeting on “Constitution of Bangladesh in the Light of Fifteenth Amendment” organised by Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee (EGDNC) at Women’s Voluntary Association in the capital Saturday afternoon.

The government led by military ruler HM Ershad on June 9, 1988 inserted a section in the eighth amendment to the constitution to give Islam the status of state religion.
