Joe Paterno Fired By Penn State Board Of Trustees, According To Report

by Russ Oates

READ MORE: Penn St. Nittany Lions

After several days of revelations surrounding the conduct of coaches and administrative officials at Penn State involved in the Jerry Sandusky scandal, head coach Joe Paterno will not coach another game for the Nittany Lions, reports Jim Gardner. Tom Bradley will serve as interim coach. The Board of Trustees is expected to announce this decision at a 10:00 p.m. ET press conference.

On Wednesday afternoon, Paterno had announced his retirement effective at the end of the 2011 season, but speculation arose shortly after that press conference that the Board of Trustees could still get involved with Paterno. The Board promised a swift investigation into the matter and it appears that Paterno was not able to escape the long arm of the Trustees.

Penn State President Graham Spanier has reportedly resigned.

in two freaking weeks.

It's a freaking classical Greek tragedy.

At digital speed.

3. It was obvious this afternoon that Paterno would never coach another game
Midway through his written statement he tipped off what was sure to happen, as soon as the Trustees met.

Paterno wrote, "There is no reason for the Board of Trustees to spend one minute discussing my future..."

A sentence like that doesn't exist if Paterno sensed he had any chance to deflect the inevitable.

4. yeah, that was clearly a last, desperate ploy
Based on what I've seen of Scott Paterno, he might have honestly thought that would work.

5. Good, sad affair, but good.
No excuse for not calling police for any of these 'leaders' of young men.

7. Up until this morning I was willing to accept
that the Board of Trustees would accept his resignation.

I happened to catch a couple of minutes of Mike and Mike and they were replaying snippets of their interview with Paul Pluzlowski who played at Penn State from 2003 - 2007.

He said that while he was there, Sandusky was still a regular there and involved with the team.

At that point, I was done.
