WalMart and Me ...
I sent this e-mail to Walmart a while back:
*********************************************************
March 30, 2005

Dear WalMart Pharmacy,

All over the country I have noticed a disturbing trend of
pharmacies refusing to fill women's prescriptions for birth
control. When a woman and her doctor decide that a
prescription for contraception is in the woman's best
interest, a third party has no right to override that
decision. Pharmacies must ensure that patients get their
doctor-prescribed medication without delay or
inconvenience. I ask that your company assure me and your
other customers that no woman seeking prescription
contraception will be turned away by your company's
pharmacies.

As a customer, I want all of my prescriptions to be filled:
You want my money? -- Fill my prescriptions!

No doubt a majority of your customers take for granted that
women should be able to receive their birth control despite
the personal beliefs of the individual pharmacist. Timely
access to contraception is central to women's health,
autonomy, and equality. We must trust women and their
doctors to make their own reproductive health decisions.

I thank you, in advance, for protecting your customer's
health by ensuring your pharmacy will guarantee women have
unhindered access to their prescribed medications.

Thank you for your attention and support.

Sincerely,
PA Mamma

*********************************************************************
And I received this reply:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for contacting us at Walmart.com regarding women?s
prescriptions for birth control. Your comments and concerns are very
important to us as we strive to meet your needs.

Wal-Mart does not carry emergency contraceptives. Our pharmacists may
decline to fill a prescription based on personal convictions. However,
they must find another pharmacist, either at Wal-Mart or another
pharmacy, who can assist you by filling your prescription.

Again, we thank you for your comments regarding this issue.

Sincerely,

Customer Service at Walmart.com
*********************************************************************
So I sent them this:

Dear WalMart,

My Goodness! I am so glad that you have finally embraced the “Culture of Life.”
I am so excited and see this as only the beginning. I can now envision a day when your cashiers refuse to sell cigarettes and tobacco products, and guns and ammo because, gosh darn it, they kill people too.

Real smart business move. Brilliant. We already know that you crap on Women’s Rights from the largest class action law suit in U.S. history brought against you by YOUR employees. Now I get to tell everyone I meet yet another reason to not shop at your stores.

I hope that the terrorist, Randall Terrys of the world that you pander to, will enjoy your crappy service and disgusting white bread, because I certainly won’t miss it.

Never Ever Getting My Business Again,
PA Mamma
*****************************************************************
And guess what I just got back:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for contacting us at Walmart.com regarding women?s
prescriptions for birth control. Your comments and concerns are very
important to us as we strive to meet your needs.

Wal-Mart does not carry emergency contraceptives. Our pharmacists may
decline to fill a prescription based on personal convictions. However,
they must find another pharmacist, either at Wal-Mart or another
pharmacy, who can assist you by filling your prescription.

Again, we thank you for your comments regarding this issue.

Sincerely,

1. Puke and more puke
I went through the same thing. Same response - only I didn't send a second email. I'm going on two years not shopping at WalMart. They are the leading, shining example of "corporations don't have morals." I could rant on forever, but you did a really good job. A corporation without morals will stick to the script, never admit a mistake, and have no ethical obligation to the public at large. Hmmm...sounds just like a political party I know.

2. Good work!
It is wonderful when you realize how carefully they peruse every single letter,is it not? Glad you decided to join us in the boycott!

3. Thanks ...
Yeah, WalMart is the essence of EVIL !
We call them WarMart due to all their GOP donations !

We have been boycotting for about 2 years as well, (which has been difficult to do where we live) but I sent that through NARAL, (I think, anyway,) and I figured it couldn’t hurt to act like I was a customer up until now.

They might not read it but someone here may -- and that’s all that we can hope for.

:)

4. Nice to know they care, huh?
We gave up Walmart in about 2000, even though it is the largest store in the area where we lived then, and it would have been far more convenient. I just hate the way they drove the other companies in the area out of business, and I hate, hate, hate their labor practices.

Perhaps the next campaign should be to get checkers to refuse to sell guns to men (since men commit 85% of all gun-based crimes) on the rationale that we promote a culture of life.

Oh, wait.

A checker at a gun shop or a walmart is a low paid, low level, poorly educated interchangable part. A pharmacist at a walmart is an educated person who can get a job anywhere and is in demand.

Hmmm.... are we seeing a problem here? I now understand why walmart won't fire the pharmacists for violating the corporate policy of "the customer comes first" (except under situations a-l of the employee handbook).... They're having a hell of a time hiring pharmacists. Could it be because the bennies suck and the environment is hell?
