'Sperm stopping' male pill hope (BBC)
Scientists are developing a male contraceptive drug which stops the development process of sperm.

Tests on rats show blocking connections to cells which "nurture" developing sperm makes the animals infertile.

The US and Italian researchers say they used relatively low doses of the molecule and found no obvious side effects, and the effect was reversible.

But they told Nature Medicine that work was now needed to see if their approach is equally effective and safe in men.
***
In the study authors used a recently developed molecule called Adjudin to dislodge the developing sperm from the Sertoli cells.

So ... choice ... and responsibilty ... could now fall on WHOM ? :dilemma:

1. Since women still carry the risk of pregnancy

it's unlikely that single women will be able to trust that the men they sleep with are being truthful and reliable when they say, "Hey no worries, I've been taking the Pill!"

On the other hand, it's good to have an alternative for couples who find it useful.

8. Just women carry the risks?
For the 9 months, sure. But if the women chooses to go through the whole 9 months and keep the baby.. then the male is taking life changing risks as well. She might get to 'choose' because it's her body. But after her choice, he has none. He does have the responsiblty to the child.

Many men have been 'caught' by women taking the pill (but not) and/or using condoms (with pin holes). Most are real accidents. But because some are done on purpose, it will generally be assumed it was 'planned'. Tee hee.. for once, I would like a MAN to have to explain how the accident happened. LOL! Aghm. Stuff happens. NOthing is perfect.

I have a male family member who's wife decided SHE wanted more kids NOW. She was suppose to be on BC, but wasn't. He didn't know, until she was all ready prego. Come to find out, she just wants to stay home and pop out kids. He wanted to work full time and go to college to better the income in the long run. Instead, he has to work 2+plus jobs. Her choice, but his family responsiblity.

Pill and condoms, double protection. With this pill, it will allow MEN the same double protection.

3. I personally can't wait for this.
My wife has had nothing but problems with the pill over the last few years (as she has gotten older the hormonal balance has been all out of whack). I'd love to take that burden away off her shoulders.

9. You're sweet
Thank you for understanding "the burden" carried by your wife and actually loving her enough to want to bear it for her. That's a very nice thing to read first thing in the morning.

4. while I suppose this is a good thing...

...if I were a woman wanting to avoid pregnancy I'd have to make damn sure I watched the dude swallow that puppy-- the consequences will always be more difficult for women than for men. One of the reasons I'm such a proponant of vasectomy is that it removes the need for women to use hormones that have side effects that at least some women find uncomfortable, and it also makes it unnecessary for either partner to worry about the actions of the other. Trust means never having to say "oops, I forgot." Vasectomy was one of the best decisions I've ever made in my entire life. Future generations bereft of my progeny will be eternally thankful.

10. It's about time
With contraceptives that men can take, this is another way to increase effectiveness. If the woman can take pills, her partner can take it and she can back it up with something else.

Combining methods is always a good idea. If the couple doesn't want a child, now both partners can back each other up.

Why has this not been an area of research? I for one would have welcomed it way earlier!
