Man sentenced to life in prison for dealing drugs
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A Chicago man has been sentenced to life in federal prison for dealing drugs near an elementary school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Dewanis Rogers was accused of distributing crack cocaine within 1,000 feet of the school.

He pleaded guilty in February to conspiracy to distribute more than 50 grams of crack after being previously convicted of two felony drug charges.

Rogers was sentenced last week by U.S. District Judge Linda Reade. There's no parole in the federal system.

1. Injustice personified
Had this man raped or killed, he would serve less time. Something is horribly wrong about a life sentence for a non-violent offense probably based on the man's disease of addiction.

2. agreed even more evidence that the drug war needs ending.
are there many places in urban areas that could be outside of 1000 feet from a school. seems if there are a lot of people including school aged people then there would be a lot of schools.

3. As a parent
I am outraged that any one would get such a severe penalty for distributing such a harmless drug 1000 feet within a school! Stop taking away our rights!
