If pot legalization happens lying to your kids won’t suffice anymore
If pot legalization happens lying to your kids won’t suffice anymore
Arthur Salm, SDNN

Should Californians continue their inexplicable march toward sanity and vote in favor of the initiative to legalize marijuana for personal use, many Golden State parents will have to reconsider, readjust, rejigger … recalibrate one of the most important of all parenting skills:

Lying...

The subject of drugs has long presented a lot of us parents with tough choices. Should we be truthful with our increasingly savvy and soon-to-be-of-age children, and own up to indiscretions of our youth, and maybe even to indiscretions of our adulthood? Offer watered-down indiscretions? (see “Inhale, Didn’t” under Clinton, Bill.) Flat-out lie? (“No.”) Try to distract them with “Got your nose!”? (Though not particularly effective on a 14-year-old.)

So far, so whatever. This has been going on for a long time, and to whatever degree every family has worked it out, well, we’ve worked out. But the marijuana initiative will, for some of us, change everything...

1. I've been honest with my kids since they were teens....
...I'd much rather they smoked pot than drank alcohol.

2. In my house, children are not allow to drink alcoholic beverages...
I never serve alcohol to adults either.

No one will be allowed to light up on my property, even if it is legal.

What my children do as adults is their choice, as long as they do not do it in my house or while living under my roof.

3. I know I shocked the shoes off some friends
when their daughter asked me about smoking. I said if she was going to be stupid enough to inhale smoke into her lungs, it should be pot instead of tobacco because pot wasn't addictive and tobacco was.

Her parents should have known better, they were pot smokers a hell of a lot longer than I was.

As for the daughter, she didn't seem interested in drugs, at all, including cigarettes and alcohol.
