Three KC residents filed a lawsuit to challenge the way Missouri is distributing school money
JEFFERSON, Missouri - Three Kansas City residents say the city's schools are being shorted millions of dollars.

According to The Jefferson City News Tribune, they say the city's schools are due nearly $3 million more than Gov. Jay Nixon's administration is distributing to them.

Lawmakers passed a budget bill that tried to exempt some school districts from losing money in the middle of the year.

Nixon signed the bill but instructed the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to ignore wording about how to distribute the money. Instead, Nixon said to apply the cuts proportionately to all schools.

Nixon said it was unconstitutional for lawmakers to change the school funding formula in a budget bill.
