My school system is considering dropping accrediation
http://www.newsobserver.com/2011/01/12/915108/wake-board-may-drop-accreditation.html

The Wake County school board is weighing whether to drop accreditation for the system's high schools rather than go along with an accrediting agency's probe - a rare move which, if approved, could lower the value of diplomas for public high school students in the county.

A vote could come at a public meeting tonight at Millbrook High School, following two days of high-stakes maneuvering and communications between the system's leaders and an accrediting agency.

The Wake school board leadership has been resisting elements of the review by the agency, AdvancED, since the investigation was announced in last year. On Tuesday, the board asked the agency to put off its visit while members considered whether to give up accreditation rather than cooperate.

1. Sorry to put it this way

But you're fucked if they do that.

The diploma will only be as worth as much as the paper it's printed on.

2. I am a teacher not a student
but yes, for the students it is a really big problem. They will be able to go in state where we have a good rep but out of state is finished.

3. Suggestion......
....ask the school board to go back to school for four years and get an education. They obviously need it.

4. This sentence certainly stopped me in my tracks
In addition to student assignment, AdvancED has raised questions about the board's hiring of attorney Thomas Farr as special interim counsel, the use of the conservative-leaning Civitas Institute to train board members,

I should have guessed. Sorry, I hope they vote to pursue the accreditation. The students will be the main losers if they don't.

7. Possibly a lot
School board members should not be trained in political ideology, right or left. They should be trained in things like administration, budgeting, application of local, state, and federal laws to their district--things that involve 'equal access,' 'non-discrimination,' 'separation of church and state,' and so forth. They should not, for instance, be trained in how to skirt or even oppose these issues and laws. I'm not saying that's what happened here (though it sounds like it, with the busing), but it could pertain to every level of what a district does.

Accreditation is not just about test scores or teacher training; it involves a broad assessment of a school district's policies, practices, and services.

8. many a district has lost accrediation over budget issues
so that is hardly unusual.

10. Civitas Vision/Mission
The vision of the Civitas Institute is of a North Carolina whose citizens enjoy liberty and prosperity derived from limited government, personal responsibility and civic engagement. The mission of the Civitas Institute is to facilitate the implementation of conservative policy solutions to improve the lives of all North Carolinians. Towards that end, Civitas provides research, information and training to:

• empower citizens to become better civic leaders and more informed voters;
• educate emerging public leaders, enabling them to be more effective in the democratic process;
• inform elected officials about citizen-based, free-market solutions to problems facing North Carolinians.
