The Kansas City School District should be applauded for trying to get the best teachers in classrooms. But pitting the teachers union against Teach for America is a poor way to accomplish the task, and that appears to be happening.
Of about 200 nontenured teachers in the district, 115 have been told their contracts won’t be renewed.
What’s troubling is the district’s new contract with Teach for America, crafted about a month ago, brings in 150 top college graduates for teaching jobs in Kansas City schools. Teach for America recruits will go from filling gaps in the teaching ranks to what appears to be replacements for educators the district is jettisoning.
It is understandable that teachers, who had supported Teach for America, packed the Board of Education meeting Wednesday night to show they’re upset with Superintendent John Covington and the school board.
