HuffPo Asks Readers “Who’s Got The Tranny Look?”
from Equality Matters

On November 3, the Huffington Post published a grossly transphobic http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/03/sofia-vergara-tranny_n_1074437.html?ref=style">article asking readers to determine which female celebrity actress “has got the more ‘tranny’ look.”

The article – which appeared in Huffington Post’s Style section and was written by Ellie Krupnick – references two quotes in which actresses Sofia Vergara and Blake Lively reference looking and feeling “like a tranny,” inviting readers to vote for “who’s the tranniest of them all”

...

Needless to say, Krupnick’s article is premised on the idea that it’s somehow an insult or embarrassing to be compared to a transgender person. Throughout the piece, she uses the terms “http://www.glaad.org/reference/transgender">tranny” and “transvestite” – both derogatory ways to describe transgender people. In a twisted attempt to appear civil, Krupnick even assures both actresses that, unlike “transvestites,” they are “gorgeous” and shouldn’t take the poll personally.

8. Aside from the gist of the article, since when is 'transvestite' a derogatory
Edited on Mon Nov-07-11 12:09 PM by RaleighNCDUer
way to describe transgender people?

'Trans' - across or to the other side, and 'vest' - vestments (dressing), and 'ite' - a person; transvestite, a person who cross dresses. How is that derogatory? How is that any less neutral than transgender?

12. Of course, and I can see how tying 'tranny' to 'transvestite' would
color one with the other, but I was only wondering if 'transvestite' is actually considered derogatory by the transgender community, as the author suggested. If so, I was unaware of it and am in need of education on it. I don't really have much connection with GLBT - I've joined my sister and her partner at a couple events and marches for their rights. That being the case, I want to know if I inadvertently step on someone's toes.

15. Look at the two terms again
A person who goes under a change like a transgender person does is not the same as putting on different clothes. It has nothing to do with clothes, but people who hate want to make it simple like that. It's a way to degrade the transgender community; and in extension, everyone of us who isn't heterosexual. It's a way to belittle a person, saying they're nothing but wanting to wear another gender's clothes, as if that was the problem bothering them. When they win that argument, then they can say a person can be fixed and be straight and fine with their gender just like them.

The article links to an explanation of this. http://www.glaad.org/reference/transgender

17. With That Premise.........

Then I assume you would agree in describing procreating heterosexuals as "Breeders".... after all.....

...since you like breaking down words, and giving definitions..... the dictionary defines breeding as:

breed·ing

Show IPA

noun

1.the producing of offspring.

2.the improvement or development of breeds of livestock, as by selective mating and hybridization.

3.Horticulture. the production of new forms by selection, crossing, and hybridizing.

4.training; nurture: He is a man of good breeding.

5.the result of upbringing or training as shown in behavior and manners; manners, especially good manners: You can tell when a person has breeding.

Hence.... the definition of a heterosexual whom breeds with another heterosexual should in the future be known as a "breeder".......

... and I mean.... how in the world would calling someone a "Breeder" ever be construed as demeaning, as that is what they are doing.... breeding, and producing offspring, correct?.....

... and we all know that the term "Breeder" isn't derogatory, don't we now? I mean it describes what they are doing... Breeding....

Your little song, and dance today was appreciated..... but sadly no one bought tickets for your second performance..... So it's time to go home.....

Now, wasn't that fun?

18. Lighten up - I was looking for information.
Or do you prefer that straights hold to their misconceptions about gays and transgender people?

The author of the article made the claim that 'transvestite' is a derogatory term for transgender people. Nevertheless, many transgender people are transvestite, and their crossing of gender boundaries is restricted to cross-dressing.

I can see how the term, applied broadly to all transgendered, is not appropriate, but I was wondering if it has fallen out of favor for those who specifically are cross-dressers.

There is no need to read hostility into this. Nor any need to be hostile.

And, BTW, I DO refer to people like the Duggars as 'breeders' - reckless overpopulation is a problem, and should not be anyone's goal.
