Bush Aide: No Question Social Security Plan Needed
By REUTERS

Filed at 12:30 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A top White House economic adviser charged on Tuesday that anyone who opposes Bush administration plans to overhaul Social Security was being willfully ignorant about problems with the current system.

In prepared remarks for the prestigious Council on Foreign Relations, the chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, Gregory Mankiw, said ``the sophistry of those opposed to reform'' should be avoided because it masks real problems with the retirement program .<snip>

"The benefits now scheduled for future generations under current law are not sustainable given the projected path of payroll tax revenue,'' Mankiw said. ``They are empty promises. Unless a listener is discerning, empty promises will always have a superficial appeal."

He suggested that, unless the Bush administration's call for some type of unspecified reforms was accepted, ``the United States will face little choice but vastly higher taxes'' and reduced economic growth in future.

3. Increasing taxes is the correct answer.
And having pretty extensively studied economics in my university, including Mankiw's texts, there's no mystery here--it boils down to what are our social priorities.

Do we want to respect our older citizens and ensure their living standards, or do we want to feed them into the gas ovens of privatization?

It is worth making the rich pay more to ensure the respect for the integrity of the older citizens. The Malthusian, evil ideology that we can cast off social sectors as "useless eaters" should be have been extinguished along with Hitler fascism, but it lives on in neo-liberal economics and those who make use of it.
