Here is an interesting report on AI -
It probably will resonate (or not) with more members here than folks I talk to personally on a day to day basis.

http://singinst.org/upload/artificial-intelligence-risk.pdf

It is a long report, some forty pages. But maybe a little each day?

if you read it, let me know your thoughts.

Stopping on page 21 to do some chores, but I've sunken the last hour or so into this and it's fascinating. My SIL took his graduate degree in AI and cognitive science, and his undergrad degree (and most of one masters) was in philosophy. I can imagine his voice as I read-- some of the lines of argument are ones I've heard him make in other contexts. Anyway, I'm enjoying the report-- and I hope you don't mind if I follow the link to the earlier chapter on cognitive bias as well. Makes a nice break from helping grad students with data analysis!

on edit: Ho boy, DU being what it is, it just occurred to me that you might BE my SIL, LOL. Cue recursive embarrassment....

2. Nope, we are not related (that I know of.)
Anyway, if you wanna continue the dialogue I would enjoy that very much.

I am outside getting my roses and heather planted. But I do plan on getting through the report tonight. So I will comment probably around midnight.

3. The reason it's hard to find cites for global catastrophic risks of Artificial Intelligence
is because Skynet went back in time and deleted them.

4. Odd coincidence..
I just picked up a copy of this book at a thrift store.

Interesting article, I'm about a dozen pages in.

Combine this with Vernor Vinge's view of a technological singularity and it seems pretty clear that the future is wildly unpredictable.
