Tammy Grimes is a hero, and could use our help.
Tammy Grimes, founder of Dogs Deserve Better, was arrested September 11, 2006 for helping a dying chained dog named Doogie who could not stand in East Freedom, Pennsylvania.

If you saw this (pic below) and the police, animal control and the humane society refused to intervene, what would you do?

"I made the decision that I would not leave him lying there on the cold wet ground for one moment longer, and I would accept all consequences of my decision."

Damn straight.

"The vet documented his general negligent condition, low weight, sores, missing fur, and took xrays of his back and hips. He determined that he has very bad back spurs that are causing him a lot of pain and are most likely responsible for his inability to walk."

12. When she wins her case, I believe she could file
suit against the city/county for wrongful imprisonment or defamation of character. In front of a jury, that video (unless quashed) would be quite the stake in the heart for defense, especially with the backing of a veterinarian, etc. With a jury, the tears may dry but the memory will remain.

here is yesterday's post:

9/18/06. Thanks to everyone at Awareness Day and Woofstock for their support! The Altoona Mirror Saturday ran a headine that states 'Vet Confirms Dog Was Abused!' Finally! I spoke to a lot of legal experts plus two great humane officers (I should have got your card, can you please call me at 814.941.7447?) who said they would absolutely prosecute the Arnolds for abuse given all the evidence. Our Action Call is therefore to keep up the pressure on the humane officer to get the cruelty investigation rolling.

I will be filing a private criminal complaint asap.

9/24 Update on Grimes/Doogie Case

Update from Court 9/21. Two counts, Theft and Receiving Stolen Property are going to court on November 27th. Criminal mischief, and criminal trespass were dropped. Please plan to be there to support if you can. See the site at: http://www.dogsdeservebetter.org/doogie.html for great photos of the rally, video, and continued updates.

Make sure to watch Inside Edition for an update Monday, September 25, check the times near you for accurate time. They are telling me they are getting a ton of e-mail response to our stories, and have promised to actually MENTION Dogs Deserve Better this time (Which they haven't done in the past)! Make sure to write them at: iemail@kingworld.com with positive or negative comments on this story.

The Altoona Mirror ran a photo of Doogie provided by the Arnolds (on his chain, of course) on Sunday, September 24. This is after they have told everyone who asks them that they do not run any photos that they do not take themselves, because someone could be doctoring it. Apparently this is NOT true, they just won't run the photos we've provided of him suffering! They also have not run ONE positive letter to the editor, despite receiving thousands of them. Please continue to write them and insist on fair editorial practices at:opinion@altoonamirror.com

PA state reps Geist and Stern say they have not heard from their constituents on this issue. If you are in the Blair County PA area and are in their district, please start calling, writing, emailing them ASAP. We need them to understand HOW MUCH we need things to change here, and that we expect them to support HB1911 and stand up for dogs who are left to die on the end of a chain.

Finally, those who are against us are mounting e-mail campaigns, etc., defaming Grimes, Dogs Deserve Better, all animal advocates, and all manner of allegations. If you get these e-mails, just ask them to see their proof.

If they actually DO provide you proof, please send it to me at: tammy@dogsdeservebetter.org, so that I can address the issue. We must remain strong as a movement...this is no time to allow any divide and conquer techniques! We have proof of Doogie's suffering, and PA's failure to enforce existing cruelty laws. That's what this issue is about, and we must not let them sway us from the issue at hand. We must remain strong.

17. Please look at this Animal Planet Hero Nomination Page
Tipton, PA—Tammy Grimes, founder of Dogs Deserve Better, has been chosen as a Top Ten Finalist in the Animal Planet Hero of the Year Contest. The winning nomination came from Autumn Temple of Altoona, PA, a Dogs Deserve Better supporter and local hero in her own right through her work with the area's families and children.

Autumn's winning nomination states, "Tammy dedicates so many hours to Dogs Deserve Better that this organization is her life. Dogs Deserve Better pays for fencing for those who want to unchain their animals and allow them freedom. Tammy is also a perpetual foster mom to unwanted dogs, until she can find them a home. Tammy’s home should be considered the dogs’ home as she has installed a number of doggy doors, and has fenced the yard. Her home is very much the place for animals.

>From July 1 - July 15, Tammy successfully held Dogs Deserve Better’s first annual “Chain Off Contest” to raise awareness for chained dogs. Eleven contestants were chained to doghouses and the one who lasted the longest won a new Chevy Aveo. As a result of the contest, the runner-up of the contest immediately went home and unchained his dog. Dogs Deserves Better is now working with the dog and its guardian to create an animal-friendly environment. Tammy Grimes has inspired so many others that she now has Dogs Deserve Better representatives in 37 states, plus Puerto Rico and Canada. Tammy also involves youth in the advocacy of animals as junior representatives for the organization. Tammy’s efforts have changed the lives of many animals and families."

If Grimes wins, Dogs Deserve Better will receive a $10,000 donation to further it's efforts for chained and penned dogs. To vote, click on the photo above, or go to http://animal.discovery.com/convergence/hero_of_the_year/poll/poll.html.

Dogs Deserve Better is a 501c3 nonprofit organization headquartered in Tipton, Pennsylvania, is the 2003 First Place Winner of the ASPCA Pet Protector Award, and currently has 150 area reps in 37 states as well as in Canada and Australia.

Tammy is currently in 2nd place. There are a lot of deserving nominees. Vote for your favorite.
