And the beat goes on: Vick pit bulls get 'special master'
by Andrew Zajac

A federal judge overseeing the case of the pit bulls in the Michael Vick dogfighting case has appointed Rebecca Huss, a law professor at Valporaiso University, as special master to look after the canine's interests.

Authorities have so far euthanized one of the 49 dogs currently in federal care in the case.

A filing released late Monday also asks the court to authorize spaying or nuetering the animals and implanting them with microchips to allow for tracking in the event they're lost or on the loose.

One part of Huss's job will be to continue observation of the dogs to figure out the best living arrangements for them, and to determine which ones may have been too damaged by the dogfighting regimen and should be put down.

Ms. Huss has some interesting work in her background:

My money is on an Order for treatment and housing/sanctuary with Vick having to foot the bill.

To wit, I point in his general direction and utter "Ha, ha"

1. Is she the best choice for a guardian?

The United States has identified Rebecca J. Huss, Professor of Law at Valparaiso University School of Law, as the appropriate individual to serve as the guardian/special master. Professor Huss is a leading expert in animal law in the United States. Prior to becoming a full time member of the law school faculty at Valparaiso University School of Law, she practiced in
two large firms and worked in the law department of a pharmaceutical company's animal health division. Professor Huss is aware of the duties and responsibilities required of the guardian/special master in this case, and if appointed by the Court, has agreed to accept that appointment.

I'm not sure. I definitely liked her when I saw she was a leading expert in animal law but then I was disappointed when I read further and found out she worked for a pharma co.

Also, wouldn't a vet be a better judge of the animals' conditions?

I'm asking honestly, not sure really. I just want these little guys to get the best care possible!

2. She's got the law nailed down.
I don't care for some of her past, either, but she's in if for the dogs. A vet can't act in court. The dogs are being constantly evaluated by vets and staff, she's their friend in the court.
