Vegan question
I am trying to make the move to vegan, at least during the week, when my husband is on the road. On the weekend, for now, I'll stay vegetarian. We've been married less then a month, if I make too many changes all at once, he may faint! :hippie:

My question is about yeast. Is it vegan?

1. 99.9% of vegans eat yeast.
The only vegans I've met who refuse to eat the wee yeastie beasties were also macrobioticists.

Yeast is the main ingredient in many dry vegan cheese substitutes (Parmesan, etc.), and is great on popcorn. :)

3. Glad to help.
I have to admit that yeast, honey, and mushrooms are the three items I get the most questions about as a vegan.

It's funny that we vegans are usually worried about accidentally consuming lanolin, shellac, casein, etc., while my foodie friends want to know if it's OK to eat mushrooms, as they're neither animal nor plants. :)

4. Almost all yeast I can think of is. Nutritional yeast is a nice addition
to many recipes, too. The flavor is almost...cheesy, for lack of a better word.

5. Thou shalt not eat the flesh of the yeastabeast, for they feel pain most keenly.

Kidding. ;)

There's yeast in the air. Given half a chance, they'll colonize human bodies. (Thrush, by the way, sucketh mightily. Especially when concurrent with bacterial mastitis. But I digress.) Even if you didn't intentionally add it to your food, it'd wind up there. Luckily for all of us, yeast is related to mushrooms and other fungi, and doesn't have a nervous system or anything else that would indicate any reason to avoid eating them.

9. Damn yeast huggers!! I'm gonna eat extra yeast tonight, just to piss 'em off.
No one tells me what fungus I can and cannot eat!! Damned radical yeast liberationists.

I'm all for yeast welfare, but this nonsense about yeast having rights, well, that's where I draw the line!!

11. We evolved to where we are by eating yeast and lots of it!
How do you think our brains got so big? And look at our teeth! Those are yeast-eating teeth if ever I saw 'em! And don't even get me started on the large intestine!
